Antibiotics are widely used in livestock production for disease prevention, with significant quantities of antibiotics used as a feed supplement for growth enhancement of food animals. Due to the residual effect of antibiotics in animal products and the development of resistance to it by some bacteria, there has been decreasing acceptance of the additive in many countries of the world. Since the ban on antibiotics in animal feed, producers often seek alternative natural feedstuffs to meet the demands of the industry. Among many antibiotic alternatives, five medicinal plants [green tea (Camelia sinensis), water plantain (Alisma canaliculatum A. Br. et Bouche), mistletoe (Viscum album L.), cornelian cherry (Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc.) and neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.)] and six probiotic strains (Lactobacillus acidophilus KCTC 3111, L. plantarum KCTC 3104, Enterococcus faecium KCTC 2022, Bacillus subtilis KCTC 3239, B. coagulans KCTC 1015, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCTC 7915) were used in this study alone or combination in broiler and pig diets as feed additives for drawing a conclusion on the effect of growth performance, meat quality, serum biochemical and hematological parameters, immunity and antimicrobial activity. A total of nine experiments were carried out (seven in broilers and two in pigs), and the results are discussed in this dissertation. Overall, it is concluded that some medicinal plants bioactive components are potential to animal. Moreover, combination of medicinal plants with multi-strain probiotics could positively affect growth performance, improve meat quality, oxidative stability and fatty acids composition, maintain blood profile, show immunomodulatory effect, inhibit pathogens and improve the gut health. It is suggested that medicinal plants alone or with probiotics in a certain inoculation level can be used as functional feed additives for alternatives to antibiotics and animal wellbeing.
