Atmospheric CO2 concentration was about 280 ppm before the Industrial Revolution, but rapidly increased since then and currently reaches 396.8 ppm. The fact that the rate of CO2 increase over the past ten years in Korea is 1.2 times higher than the global mean emphasize that it is urgent to understand responses of plants to CO2 increase.
Atmospheric CO2 increases affect not only plant development, phenology, and morphology, but also photosynthesis and growth of plants. Stomata control the rate of CO2 absorption and transpiration. Thus, CO2 increase may affect stomatal traits as well. In particular, the effects of CO2 increases tend to be greater in C3 than in C4 plants. Despite the importance of stomata in photosynthesis, little studies have been conducted in Korea regarding the relationship between CO2 increases and stomatal traits. Thus, in this study, I examined variation in stomatal traits – stomatal density, epidermal cell density, stomatal index, and stomatal size - among C3 and C4 Cyperus species, which are common in Korea. In order to control potentially confounding phylogenetic effects, three Cyperus (Cyperaceae) species were selected: one C3 (Cyperous difformis) and two C4 (C. iria and C. microiria) species. First, I examined the temporal pattern of stomatal traits using specimens of the three species collected between 1950 – 1999 from a number of sites (36 - 38°N). I then compared C. microiria specimens collected from the central and southern regions of Korea collected between 1970 – 1999.
Over the last 50 years, CO2 concentration increased by 80 ppm. During this period stomatal density and index of both C3 and C4 plants declined, while epidermal cell density and stomatal size increased in more recent years. However, C3 and C4 plants exhibited quite different patterns. During the last 50 years, reduction in stomatal density was greater in C3 plants than in C4 plants (55.6% and 32.9%, respectively) with an opposite pattern in stomatal size (9.3% and 18.3%, respectively). Therefore, C3 palnts are characterized by many, small sized stomata, and C4 plants are defined by smaller numbers of large sized stomata. Similarly to previous studies, stomatal density and size were inversely correlated among the three Cyperus species. The increase in stomatal size is likely to be a physiological response to compensate the decline of gas exchange and transpiration due to reduction in stomatal density. When comparing C. microiria plants collected from central and southern regions, none of stomatal traits showed significant differences. If stomatal traits vary with local environment, it may be difficult to find significant differences in stomatal traits between regions. In order to assess the regional differences in stomatal variation, analyses incorporating habitat information for more number of species may be needed.
