A permanent wave is made by changing the structure or form of hair into a wave form and maintaining the wave form for long time by physical and chemical methods. This study aims to analyze the ingredient perception of permanent wave agents and their use in permanent treatment in beauty artists. Moreover this study is intended to examine the methods to obtain information on and use permanent wave agents and the attitude and desired image as a professional in beauty artists. The study revealed that most beauty artists knew the principles of permanent wave agents but did not know their ingredients exactly and use them fully for an individual customer. Since customers have varied with new information, beauty artists should response to new information and trends sensitively and lead the trend of this field. Yet beauty artists have not fully used information obtained through education and training. Most of them(94.2%) answered that they knew the principles of permanent wave agents and those with 3-year career and higher education showed higher knowledge of the principles of permanent wave agents. The necessary ingredients in permanent treatment were found as alkali(32.8%), reductant(32.6%), and oxidizer(31.3%). For the ingredient perception of alkali, many beauty artists perceived that arginine(41.5%), thioglycolic acid(24.5%), and monoethanolamin(20.1%) was not alkali. For the role of alkali, the highest response was helping the osmosis of reductant by expanding a cuticle(51.0%), followed by disconnecting S-S bonding(35.9%), and S-S bonding(7.2%). Beauty artists graduating from college perceived more commonly that alkali disconnected S-S bonding compared with other beauty artists. For the ingredient perception of reductant, many beauty artists perceived that L-cysteine(25.3%), cysteamine(22.0%), and thioglycolic acid(11.7%) was not alkali. For the role of reductant, the highest response was disconnecting S-S bonding(39.6%), followed by cysteine bonding(29.0%), and the osmosis of alkali by expanding a cuticle(28.1%). As the career of beauty artists became higher, perception that reductant disconnected S-S bonding was increased. For the ingredient perception of permanent wave agents 2, most beauty artists responded that it was divided into sodium borate and hydrogen peroxide(95.0%). For the characteristics of sodium borate and hydrogen peroxide, the most common answer was 'sodium borate was longer in chemical reaction time than hydrogen peroxide'(25.7%), followed by 'salt remained in sodium borate after a chemical reaction'(20.4%) and 'sodium borate was good for thin hair'(11.6%). Most beauty artists obtained information on permanent wave agents from inside or outside education(65.7%), followed by beauty art books(21.2%), Internet(9.7%), and co-workers(3.3%). Most beauty artists diagnosed customer's hair in counselling permanent wave agents(89.7%). In the selection of permanent wave agents, the most common consideration was customer's hair condition(49.3%), followed by a unit cost of permanent wave agents(39.6%) and customer's preference(11.1%). For customer's selection after beauty artist' advice for the ingredients and its association with hair loss, most beauty artists perceived that 'they preferred expensive agents which minimizes hair loss'(65.9%), 'followed beauty artist's advice'(25.1%) and preferred inexpensive agents even if it hurts their hair(9.0%). For an image of professional beauty artist, most beauty artists tried to obtain knowledge of beauty theory(59.1%), trained beauty skill(37.0%), managed their figures(2.5%), and managed their looks(1.4%). As a professional beauty artist, most of them desired to have theory and practical skill(35.7%), gain wealth and reputation(28.4%), develop their own individuality(22.6%), contribute to training the younger generation(9.2%), and have great and excellent technique(4.2%). The results of this study suggest that educators should develop practical methods to reinforce educational effects in the field of beauty art. Also, many researches should be conducted nationwide to develop professional beauty artists with theory and practical skill.
