ABSTRACT Effects of Core Exercise Program on Body Composition, Physical Fitness, Balance Ability and Cognitive Function of Elderly Women Department of Adapted Physical Activity Graduate School of Hanshin University Young-Bok Jang The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of core exercise on body composition, health fitness, balance ability and cognitive function of elderly women. Twenty participants(age 66.3±1.16 years) were randomized to equal volumes of either control group(n=10) or core exercise group(n=10). The core exercise program was applied three times a week during 12 weeks. Weight(kg), body fat(kg), percent of body fat(%) and muscle mass(kg) were measured as body composition. Strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance were measured by SFT(senior fitness test) as fitness level. TETRAX was used to verify balance ability and MMSE-K was used to identify cognitive function. Analysis of data is following like this. The comparison of difference between before and after of 12 weeks had implemented the paired t-test and independent t-test which compared the verification about difference of before and after variation rate of two groups. Statistical significance level was set up as a=.05. The main results of the study were as follows: 1. There were significant differences between the groups and within the group on the body composition muscle mass(p>0.016) and percent of body fat(p>0.039). 2. There were significant differences between the groups and within the group on the SFT physical test : upper body strength(p>0.000), lower body strength(p>0.001), upper body flexibility(p>0.000), lower body flexibility(p>0.000) and cardiovascular endurance(p>0.272). 3. There were significant differences between the groups and within the group on the balance ability(p>0.002). 4. There were significant differences between the groups and within the group on the cognitive function(p>0.000). The current findings of the study showed that the core exercise program is an effective and practical means of improving health related fitness and cognitive function in elderly woman. Based on the current findings of the study, we suggest that core exercise program can contribute to improve the quality of life in elderly women.
