The purpose of this paper is to estimate the possibility of Hybrid War in Korean peninsula by examining the concept and features of ‘Hybrid War’ through recent wars experienced by United States (Iraq, Afghanistan) and analyzing it in the context of threats caused by change in the Korean security environment and North Korean tactics and strategies.
This study is significant in that it addresses the need to build and operate military power which considers higher threat of North Korean Hybrid War allowing us to move out from the single tendency to build technologically advanced military in preparation of future warfare. The analysis on the concept and features of Hybrid War, relevant cases and changes in Korean security environment and North Korean tactics and strategies in this paper referred to existing research papers and books as secondary data.
The following paragraphs summarize the study of this paper.
First, Hybrid Wars from recent US experience(Iraq, Afghanistan) show that wars are prolonged despite the use of latest weapon technology.
Second, North Korea has changed its tactics and strategies based on the recent US war experiences and they possess similarities with threats, strategic·tactical·political/psychological aspects shown in Hybrid Wars.
Third, similar threats from Hybrid War and North Korean change in its strategy and tactics overlaps with the threat in unique security environment of Korea. Thus, wars in the future Korean peninsula will likely be Hybrid Wars.
The policy implications from these results are that we should divert our concept of employment for military power from full-scale wars to Hybrid Wars and focus on training joint personnel who can understand and command strategies and forces of each service for the integration of military power and development of strategies. Also, we need to secure deterrence forces that can enhance our intelligence operations and respond immediately in cases of contingencies.
