The Effect of the Activity toEvaluate Block Play through Photographing on Children's Understanding of Geometric Figures원문보기

The subjects of this study included 30 five-year-old children from S Kindergarten (boy: 15, girl: 15) and 30 five-year-old children from M Kindergarten (boy: 13, girl: 17) in Dongjak-gu District, Seoul. The children from S Kindergarten were assigned to the experimental group and those from M Kindergarten to the comparative group. In the study, questions on geometric abilities extracted from 'Test of Early Mathematics Ability(2006)' developed by Hong Hae-kyung, Lee Jeong-wuk, and Jeong Jeong-hee were used to measure the children's understanding of geometric figures. Experiment was conducted for 11 weeks, during which block play was carried out under three themes. All the children in the experimental and comparative groups were put into six teams, each composed of five, and every child participated in block play an equal number of times. In accordance with the three theme, the experimental group was forced to compose blocks and then to photograph the completed structures in the block play area. The children were allowed to take photos as they wanted in terms of angles, size expansion, photographing part of the whole, but each child was permitted to take only three to five photos. In play evaluation class, the teacher printed out the photos or made them displayed on a large screen. After that, the children introduced the block structures they created and then talked about what they felt while making them and the problems with the structures. In accordance with the same themes presented to the experimental group, the comparative group also made block structures in the block play area. However, they did not take photos of their block structures nor evaluated them, though the teacher took photos of the structures and displayed them near the block play area. In order to explore the effect of the activity to evaluate block play through photographing on children's understanding of geometric figures, the data collected through the tests conducted before and after the experiment were subject to t-test. The following results have been obtained from the study. First, the experimental group showed a significant improvement over the comparative group in the perception of plane and solid figures. Second, the experimental group showed a significant improvement over the control group in the understanding of symmetry and motion of figures. From the results above, it may be concluded that the activity to evaluate block play through photographing had a positive effect on the improvement of children's understanding of geometric figures. Therefore, it is presumed that the use of the activity to evaluate block play through photographing in education filed will effectively improve children's understanding of geometric figures.
