A Comparative Study on the Songs of G. Faure and C. Debussy : Focused on Paul Verlaine’s and 원문보기

G. Fauré is an important composer who acted as a bridge in developing into modern and contemporary music from romanticism by composing many art songs and C. Debussy is a composer who influenced most the music of the 20th century. Debussy opened the doors of modern music with impressionistic music in transitional innovation age leading to modern music from romanticism. He also made new trend of art by inserting independent concept of music of musical tradition of the previous age into his works and created implicit art having symbolic meanings. These composers wrote various songs based on the poems of symbolism, literature flow of the same age and its representative poet is Paul Verlaine. This played an important role in the development of art songs and more developed art songs of France. When playing songs, there is something that cannot be expressed only with practice of pitch and rhythm and it means that poems, the lyrics, are the important part of the songs and the poems and music interrelate and commune with each other. In this thesis, we examined the lives of G. Fauré and C. Debussy and the characteristics of their songs and made a comparative study on the two composers’ music set to the poems of 'Mandoline' and 'En Sourdine' of by Paul Verlaine. The concept of melody, tonality, harmony, rhythm, tone, etc. was mixed in new ways by meeting musical rhythm of Paul Verlaine’s poems with the songs of G. Fauré and C. Debussy. The musical personalities of the two composers with outstanding sensibility and musicality were studied through the above two songs and the results are as follows: First, G. Fauré composed songs characterized by lyrical and soft vocal melody and more expanded musical emotions, while C. Debussy showed boldness with the expression of reciting note having sensibility and implicit in his songs, completely breaking away from lyrical melody. Second, G. Fauré showed his own sensuous character by introducing chromatic scale and church mode and using rich harmony, while C. Debussy made the change in harmony innovatively and exquisitely, making dim and implicit atmosphere through the use of chromatic scale, whole tone scale, pentatonic scale, parallel chord, etc. Third, G. Fauré expressed freely different rhythms of vocal melody with the same feelings, while in the case of C. Debussy, irregular and flowing types of rhythm was proceeded in conjunct motion to break away from the monotony felt by the melody. Debussy also built the music world with his own unique technique of impressionistic music by giving soft feelings through the use of 3 connected speech and continuous speech. Fourth, G. Fauré’s composed so that the entire songs were understood by reflecting the atmosphere of the poems in piano preludes and led the atmosphere of the songs into one by using arpeggio in the accompaniment part. On the other hand, C. Debussy’s piano accompaniment parts were composed far more freely compared with vocal melodies and supported various stories of the lyrics that vocal melody could not express by preparing musical basis of vocal part.
