The purpose of this study was to develop a substantial theory geared toward having a comprehensive understanding of the independence process of discharged youth from residential care facilities and giving a systematic, integrative and holistic explanation of the process. A research question was posed: What is the independence process of discharged youth from residential care facilities? Strauss and Corbin(1998)'s grounded theory was applied to address the research question. The subjects in this study were 34 adolescents who were discharged from child residential care facilities at the Western age of 18 after living there for three years or more. It had been a year at least or more since they left the facilities, and this researcher met them through the introduction of the Korea Child Welfare Association, the Support Center for Children's Independent Living and child residential care facilities. Out of them, 18 adolescents were boys, and 16 teens were girls. By age, 13 adolescents were at the age of 21; 22 at the age of 10; three at the age of 23; five at the age of 24; and three at the age of 25. By academic background, one graduated from a vocational school, and 21 were high school graduates. Four had leave of absence from college, and five were undergraduate students. Three were college graduates. As for employment, some of them were in production posts or had part-time jobs, and the others quitted their job or looked for a job except for the five college students. By the type of occupation, some of them worked as certified nurses, nurse aids, social workers or mechanics, and the others were office workers or worked at flower shops or pizza parlors. Thus, the distribution of their occupation was diverse. By residential area, they resided in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Daejeon, South Chungcheong Province, North Chungcheong Province and South Jeolla Province. Data has been collected from June 2012 to September 2012 with consents of interviewees. Details of the interviews were recorded, and then accordind to the procedures of the Ground Theory, analysis has been carried out with data collection simultaneously. Following the data analysis method suggested by Strauss and Corbin(1998), open coding was applied. At the stage of axial coding, category analysis and process analysis were made based on paradigms. In selective coding, the researcher identified core category, worte a storyline, derived relationship of categories centering around the core category, and classified types and then established conditional matrix. As a result of analyzing the collected data by open coding, 179 concepts, 43 sub-categories and 14 categories were selected. When a categorical analysis was made by axial coding, 'discharge according to the legal regulations' was selected as the causal condition of the independence process of the adolescents who were discharged from residential care facilities, and 'unstable self-reliance' was selected as the central phenomenon. The contextual conditions of the central phenomenon were 'residential care experiences,' 'preparations for independent living,' and 'life attitude.' The action/reaction strategies related to the moderation of the phenomenon were 'finding one's own ways for oneself,' 'learning from experience,' and 'actively communicating with the world.' The intervening conditions that facilitated or inhibited the action/interaction strategies were 'support from social support networks,' 'a will to stand on one's own feet,' and 'empowering.' Finally, the results were 'having confidence about independent living,' 'finding something new in oneself,' and 'getting frustrated and blaming oneself.' There were several stages in the independent living of the teens who were discharged from residential care facilities: the stage of awareness, the stage of confrontation, the stage of challenge, the stage of growth and new leap or the stage of frustration. The stage of awareness referred to realizing the necessity of self-reliance. In this stage, the teens realized the fact that they had to leave the residential care facilities since they were 18 years old in Western age, which was the age when legal protection was withdrawn. The stage of confrontation referred to facing difficulties in standing on one's own feet. They felt lonely, was apprehensive of living alone, and found themselves to be like blind people who were ignorant of the world. It's very tough for them to make a living day by day, and they had to stand difficulties in interpersonal relationship and financial troubles. The stage of challenge referred to making a challenge to stand on one's own feet. They accepted the fact that they must be responsible for their own lives and concentrated their attention on having a stable means of livelihood. They thought they had to live for themselves against all odds, and they struggled with themselves and successfully got over difficulties. In this process, they made use of 'a strategy to carve their own way.' The stage of growth and new leap referred to growing up through challenge. In the stage of growth, they looked back on themselves and learned from their experience. They were simulated when they met good people, and they felt happy when they gave something to others whereas they just had been cared by others in the past. They learned to be empathic toward others in the course of sharing information and experiences with them, and they learned to live with them as well. They put confidence on the world in that process, and they made use of two strategies in this stage: 'learning from experience' and 'actively communicating with the world.' In the stage of new leap, they had confidence and felt a sense of achievement as a result of making ceaseless efforts to stand on their own feet, and they became confident of independent living, accepted their own lives, had a better understanding of themselves and consequently became hopeful about their future. The stage of frustration r
