The purpose of this study was to investigate the process of the action research for developing production skills through questioning strategies for primary EFL learners based on content literary texts and to explore the aspects of children's English speaking and writing during the English class and the possibility of extending children's English learning through response activities after the class. To attain the aforementioned objectives, the following research questions were proposed:
1) What are the aspects of children's English speaking and writing through teacher-centered questioning strategies based on children's literature?
2) How do student-centered questioning strategies help children participate in English speaking and writing?
3) How can children's English learning be extended through response activities using questioning strategies?
To find the answers to the aforementioned research questions, this study utilized action research in which the teacher, as the main agent of the research, planned, acted, observed the effect of questioning strategies and reflected on issues and put them into action. This study was conducted with 27 fifth grade students in an EFL classroom. Five literary texts with different themes were used for the study. During each text, students read a text and engaged in extended English speaking and writing activities with various questioning strategies. Data sources included children's artifacts, pre- and post- surveys, teacher's field notes, interviews, children's self-reflection sheets, video transcripts and children's comments on the lessons. Collected data was analyzed in a qualitative manner.
In the study, the children were able to engage in extended English speaking and writing through the following three transitional stages. First, at an early stage of literature class, the children showed deep understanding of literature through teacher-centered questioning strategies with low-level questions like memory and interpretation questions. However, high-level students dominate the conversation, so low-level students showed dissatisfaction. Effort to help low-level students participate in English speaking and writing was needed according to the purpose of this study. Second, the teacher taught useful English questions and patterns for answers through concrete and direct mini-lessons for student-centered questions. The teacher also applied the cooperative learning structure to distribute the speaking chances equally, and it became possible for the low level students to participate in English speaking and writing. Third, the children showed dissatisfaction regarding the amount of work required and were bored with lots of writing activities. In response, the teacher modified the strategies to reduce memory questions and interpretation questions, and to increase applying questions and evaluation questions for speaking and writing. As a result, they were able to join English speaking and writing voluntarily.
The data analysis yielded the following results:
The first finding is that with teacher-centered memory questions and interpretation questions, children showed deep understanding of the literature. In addition, with applying questions and evaluation questions, children expanded critical thinking and English production through speaking and writing. So teachers use various kind of questions according to the process of the study.
The second finding is that with student-centered questioning strategies and a cooperative learning structure, low-level students had an equal chance to speak in their group activities.
The third finding is that with increasing use of extended applying questions, students concentrated on the text and were willing to participate in English speaking and writing voluntarily.
Based on the result of this study, there are some positive implications:
First, by showing the process of implementing production based questioning strategies in an EFL primary classroom, this study provides practical help by acting as a model for primary English teachers planning to implement production based questioning strategies into the curriculum. Second, children can develop all four language skills through preparation, assistance, and reflection activities. Third, the cooperative learning structure and sharing help low-level students join English speaking and writing voluntarily.
This study, however, has a few limitations:
First, the teacher cannot possibly help each student sufficiently to develop his or her language skills and analyze the development of their language skills in-depth. Second, because as little as 27 students participated in this study, according to the characteristics of the study, result could have several limitations that generalizes all elementary English education.
Based on those conclusions, the following suggestions were made for follow-up studies:
First, not only qualitative method but also quantitative method will be needed in order to measure the effect of the questioning strategies for student speaking and writing. Second, more concrete and systematic research should be continued for those low-level students who are having difficulty improving their English speaking and writing, which could just be called language production.
