Recently polymer-based organic solar cells (OSCs) have attracted considerable attention in science and technology as an alternative renewable energy source of silicon-based solar cells because of their advantages of the cost-effective manufacturing process using diverse printing technologies, light weight, flexibility, and so on. Firstly, we designed and synthesized new electron-withdrawing materials in low-band gap copolymer using donor composed of fluorenone and thiophene. The new electron-withdrawing group, 2,7-bis(4-hexylthiophen-2-yl)-9H-fluoren-9-one, referred as simply dithienylfluorenone (DTFO). The synthesized DTFO was polymerized with two different electron-donating counter monomers: 2,7-dibromo-9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene (DOF) and 2,6-bis(trimethyltin)-4,8-di(2-ethylhexyloxyl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT). Two alternating copolymers, poly(DTFO-alt-DOF) and poly(DTFO-alt-BDT), were synthesized through the Suzuki and Stille polymerization though Pd(0) catalyst, respectively. The resulting copolymers were characterized by 1H , 13C NMR, UV-vis absorption, CV, TGA and AFM analysis. These copolymers were found to be soluble in common organic solvents and are easily spin-coated onto glass substrates, resulting high optical quality thin films without defects. The optical band gap energies of poly(DTFO-alt-DOF) and poly(DTFO-alt-BDT) were determined to be 2.44 and 2.23 eV, respectively. Energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) were also determined by CV. Photovoltaic devices were fabricated using the copolymers as the p-type donor and PC61BM or PC71BM as the electron acceptor. One of these devices showed a power conversion efficiency of 0.50%, with an open-circuit voltage of 0.67 V, a short-circuit current of 2.34 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.30 under air mass (AM) 1.5 global (1.5 G) illumination conditions (100 mW/cm2), respectively. Secondly, a series of semiconducting polymers containing benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) derivatives has been synthesized through a Stille coupling polymerization. Three kinds of BDT-based monomers such as 2,6-bis(trimethyltin)-4,8-di(2-ethylhexyloxyl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (ABDT), 2,6-bis(trimethyltin)-4,8-bis(5-octylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b′]dithiophene (TBDT) and 2,6-bis(trimethyltin)-4,8-bis(5-dodecylselenophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b′]dithiophene (SeBDT) were copolymerized with thiophene or alkylbithiophene co-monomers to give fully conjugated low band gap polymers for use in organic photovoltaic device as electron donors. The synthesized polymers exhibited good solubility in common solvents, and good thermal stability up to 320 °C. The highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs), lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) and optical band gap energies of the synthesized polymers were determined by using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The Optical band gap energies of the polymers were in the range of 1.83-2.12 eV, depending on the polymer structure. The bulk heterojunction organic solar cells were fabricated using the conjugated polymer as electron donors and 6,6-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as an electron acceptor. One of the fabricated devices showed a power conversion efficiency of 2.73%, with an open-circuit voltage of 0.72 V, a short-circuit current of 7.73 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.46 under air mass (AM) 1.5 global (1.5 G) illumination conditions (100 mW/cm2). Lastly, solution-processable small molecules have attractive features for application in organic solar cells. Two diketopyrrollopyrrole (DPP) - based small molecules (ADPP and FDPP) have been synthesized, characterized, and employed as electron donors for soluble small molecule organic solar cells. The central DPP unit adopted here is a versatile electron withdrawing group building block for the development of various optoelectronic materials. To increase the solubility and electron-density of the products, long alkoxy chains were introduced into the structures of ADPP and FDPP. Thermal gravimetric analysis demonstrates that the two compounds are stable up to 330 °C. The highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs), lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) and optical band gap energies of the synthesized polymers were determined by using Photo-electron spectroscopy and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The band gap energies and energy levels of ADPP, FDPP are suitable for applications as organic solar cell electron donor materials. It is concluded that the present small molecule organic solar cells are promising cells in the future.
