The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of using reading framework as a reading strategy within the Science Writing Heuristic(SWH) approach on writing for reflection of middle school students. A total of 67 third grade middle school students participated in this study, with 32 in the R-SWH(SWH with Reading framework) group and the other 35 in the SWH group. When all four inquiry activities using the SWH were carried out, the R-SWH group kept using reading framework while the SWH group did not. Summary writing and critical thinking test were implemented in order to examine the effect of this program. To understand the impact of reading framework within the SWH approach, student writing samples from the SWH students templates were collected and analyzed. Analytical framework was developed to evaluate the writing for reflection in the SWH students templates. SPSS 12 one-way ANCOVA was utilized for analysis of the data and Cohen's d index was used for the inter-group effect size. Analysis of quantitative data indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in terms of summary writing and critical thinking test between the two groups. According to the inter-group effect size analysis of summary writing and critical thinking test, on the whole, the results showed that the R-SWH group was relatively better than the SWH group in both sum and sub elements. Meanwhile, there were significant average differences between two groups in writing for reflection. As the result of analysis using reading materials on writing for reflection, the students of R-SWH group showed a higher rate than those of SWH group. The purpose of reading materials on writing for reflection was 'listing materials', 'supporting thinking change', 'analyzing inquiry process', 'solving questions' and 'understanding comprehensive concepts'. R-SWH group used the reading materials to understand the comprehensive concepts while SWH group used them to analyze inquiry process and understand the comprehensive concepts as well. R-SWH group used the reading materials for a wide variety of goals during the first writing for reflection. But, as the program was progressing, the goal for understanding comprehensive concept was considerably increased while the other purpose was relatively decreased. SWH group also did the writing for reflection by listing reading materials in the beginning of this program. As the program was progressing, the purpose for listing materials was downwards while the purpose for analyzing inquiry process and understanding comprehensive concept was gradually upwards. Both R-SWH and SWH groups used the reading materials with the goal of understanding the concept, but the success of the R-SWH group was relatively higher than that of the SWH group. As a result of analysing the transfer of reading materials to writing for reflection, in the beginning of program, the R-SWH group showed a greater rate of students who learned one or two concepts from reading framework and transferred them into reading worksheet and writing for reflection. As the program was in progress, there was a visible upward in the rate of students who transferred two or three concepts. SWH group also showed the same trend as the R-SWH group. However, compared to the R-SWH group, there was a higher rate of students who transferred only one concept from reading worksheet into writing for reflection with a lower rate for two or three concepts. The results showed when the reading framework was used as a reading strategy, it developed writing for reflection by students, facilitated utilizing reading materials and was used to construct understanding of the comprehensive concepts. In addition, it implied that reading framework was used, as a tool of scaffolding, to transfer reading materials into writing of reflection.
