In South Korea, the amounts of solid waste have been on the rise due to the growing population driven by industrial development since 1970 and the increasing consumption driven by economic development. The country's solid waste with a high percentage of moist and organic matters is different from that of other countries in terms of nature, condition, and kind. The introduction of foreign technologies to treat the country's solid waste, therefore, presents some limitations. There is a definite need for the development of stable and economic domestic technologies to treat the country's waste. This study thus proposed a low temperature hydrothermal carbonization to treat and recycle sewage sludge. Such a reaction was used to identify the optimal conditions to produce biochar. A chemical activation process was also introduced to develop the micro pores of the produced biochar. The study also analyzed its characteristics and assessed its adsorption capacity as a heavy metal adsorbent.
To produce biochar, the original material, sewage sludge, of 50 g was put in a reactor and experimented at 220, 230, and 240℃ for 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 10 hours. Considering the explosion risk of the reactor, the headspace was maintained at approximately 1/3 of its volume. Used for the chemical activation of biochar were the sewage sludge biochar produced at the optimal reaction conditions and the activation agent of potassium hydroxide(KOH). The impregnation of the activation agent was set at 1:1 mass ratio between biochar and potassium hydroxide. In Batch 1., the optimal reaction temperature for the chemical activation of biochar was determined by varying the reaction temperature at 500, 600, and 700℃ for 60 minutes each. In Batch 2., based on the identified optimal activation temperature, the optimal reaction time for the chemical activation of biochar was determined by doing an experiment for 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes.
As a result, the optimal production conditions of biochar and activated biochar were correlated with the iodine adsorption capacity. The iodine absorption capacity was assessed according to the experimental method prescribed in KS M 1802 of Korean Industrial Standard. The optimal conditions to produce biochar and activated biochar were 230℃ and 8 hours and 600℃ and 60 minutes, respectively. Those conditions were then used to conduct an isothermal adsorption experiment for removal efficiency.
heavy metals to be analyzed were arsenic(As), cadmium(Cd), copper(Cu), lead(Pb), zinc(Zn) and nickel(Ni). Lead recorded the highest heavy metal adsorption efficiency of biochar, being followed by copper, cadmium, zinc, and nickel. Arsenic was hardly adsorbed overall. The heavy metal absorption efficiency of activated biochar was shown more than 80% in all the heavy metals except for arsenic, which was not adsorbed relatively and recorded adsorption efficiency about 20~40%.
