Construction Method and Transition Process of Tombs in Early Joseon Dynasty: Change from Stnone Lined Tombs to Lime Filled Tombs원문보기

Transition from Goryeo to Joseon developed on the basis of a new thought which was called neo-Confucianism. Neo-Confucianism became a source of new ruling principle and brought changes in politics and thought. Above all, rearrangement of formalities was also implemented through the country and formalities of Elite Class(SADAEBU) positively accepted 『JUJAGARYE(朱子家禮)』. A lot of things indicated in 『JUJAGARYE』might be different or changed from tradition and especially in funerals, ‘Lime Filled Tombs(LFT)’ must have been recognized as quietly a new type of tomb.
Research trend in tombs of Joseon Dynasty period has been made with focus on literature data and specific burial systems but an archaeological approach has not yet been conducted with respect to the change from 'Stnone Lined Tombs(SLT)' to LFT. This writing intends to analyze construction method and transition process of tombs in early Joseon Dynasty and then to especially find out process of change from SLT to LFT.
First, if we look into tomb shapes of hierarch in Goryeo Dynasty, most of them are Stone Chamber Tombs and SLT except for some cremation tombs. Such burial systems continued until the early days of Joseon Dynasty. Among SLT, shapes of Flag Stone Lined Tombs and Shattered Stone Lined Tombs can be acknowledged.
FSLT means tomb made with accumulation of trimmed flagstones. It required much labor in processing and transportation, and it is deemed to be tombs of the ruling class because the buried were also confirmed as high official and royal family class. Such type of tomb was found lastly in Heo Hoon’s one in 1437 and no more has been found yet.
SSLT is the burial system which has been found since the Bronze Age, and it has stronger native characters than a tomb using flagstones. According to the ruins of which tombs were investigated and the neighboring ruins, we can estimate there was continuous construction. Chronology based on excavated relics reveals that construction continued from the end of 15th century to early 16th century.
LFT appeared from the end of 15th century. It has ashape with putting lime and charcoal around outer coffin as shown in『GUKJO-OHRYEEUI(國朝五禮儀)』. Installation of outer coffin and putting plastered wall around thereof in 『GUKJO-OHRYEEUI』can be understood that they maintained the then tradition and adopted a new system without referring to 『JUJAGARYE』as it is.
SLT was prohibited and ‘Lime Divider(灰隔)’ was encouraged instead at the county level since the early 15th century but LFT actually appeared in earnest from the late 15th century. The reason is idelogical background effect that recognition of『JUJAGARYE』as an issue of personal practice in King Seong-jong period. And it is because they adopted a new type of tombs instead of completely excluding traditional elements.
This thesis limited object period of study to the early Joseonn Dynasty but LFT changed its shape into the one without charcoal layers and outer coffin passing through two wars. It is expected that changes in funerals can be grasped more specifically during the whole period of Joseon Dynasty if a review is made on LFT in the late Joseon Dynasty.
