As the act of dumping food wastewater into the ocean will be prohibited in 2013 according to the London Dumping Convention, increasing attention has been paid to an anaerobic digestion tank that can process high-concentration organic wastewater and collect methane gas throughout the entire treatment process of sewage and wastewater.
In that aspect, anaerobic digestion is expected to establish itself as an axis of new renewable energy in the long term, become an appropriate inland treatment alternative to reflect the trends of organic wastewater management and make a contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas in the nation by solving environmental issues and producing alternative energy to replace fossil fuel.
In an effort to figure out the optimal loading rate of organic wastewater containing high-concentration nitrogen, this study designed and made a single mesophilic anaerobic digestion treatment process in a lab scale for experiments and used food wastewater from the S landfill site as a substrate. In the experiments, nitrogen loading gradually increased to 0.075, 0.15, and 0.3kgN/m3/d in four reactors(R1,R2, R3, and R4) respectively. In R1 reactor, alkalinity, ammonia and TS concentration were regulated to see whether it would be possible to generate biogas continuously. After 200 days from the beginning of digestion tank operation, the production of biogas were suspended in R4 that could not endure the 0.3kgN/m3/d loading. In R2 and R3 where internal control was not achieved, the digestion sludge concentrations were 11,000~12,000mg/L as CaCO3 for alkalinity, 2,000~2,500mg/L for ammonia, and 4,000~8,000mg/L for SCODCr respectively. In R1 where internal concentration was regulated, alkalinity was 3,500~3,800mg/L as CaCO3, ammonia was 500~600mg/L, and SCODCr was 800~1,100mg/L respectively. R1 and R2 produced 42L/d of biogas, whereas R3 70L/d of biogas. Methane contents were 68%, 61%, and 56% in R1, R2, and R3, respectively.
An anaerobic digestion reactor using food wastewater improves the activity of anaerobic microorganisms by regulating the concentration of ammonia and alkalinity at 0.075kgN/m3/d of nitrogen loading rate and accordingly prevents the accumulation of organic matters and ammonia, thus reducing the burden of combined treatment with the sewage treatment facilities and being able to generate biogas of high methane contents continuously.
