The purpose of this study was to examine the state of street dance education and the awareness of street dancers, street dance majors, dance majors and people in general about street dance. It's basically meant to discuss the value of street dance, to raise awareness of street dance and to provide information on the systematic theorization and development of street dance.
The state of street dance education provided by six domestic associations that granted certificates of qualifications related to street dance was analyzed, and a survey was conducted on 171 professional street dancers and street dance majors, 163 dance majors in four-year universities in Seoul and 204 people in general to find out their awareness of street dance. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 18.0. The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, how street dance education was conducted by the six institutions that granted certificates of qualifications related to street dance was analyzed. As a result, it's found that street dance education was provided by nonspecialists, and certificates of qualifications were granted about diverse fields such as jazz dance, aerobics and sport for all.
Second, to what extent the respondents were aware of the term street dance was analyzed. As a result, those who majored in street dance ranked highest, followed by the dance majors and the people in general. Every respondent was cognizant of the terms about the genres of street dance except two dance majors and eight people in general.
Third, how they looked at the nature of street dance was analyzed. And more than half those who majored in street dance regarded it as the arts of dance, and 38 percent of the dance majors and 19.6 percent of the people in general took the same view.
Fourth, how much they were exposed to street dance was analyzed. And all the respondents who majored in street dance experienced street dance, and their street dance experiences were larger than those of the dance majors and people in general.
Fifth, whether they knew that colleges were equipped with departments related to street dance or not was analyzed to grasp their concern for street dance. As a result, 95.2 percent of the respondents who majored in street dance knew the fact, whereas the rates of the dance majors and people in general who knew it stood at 56.4 percent and 27.5 percent respectively.
Sixth, how they looked at the value of street dance was analyzed, and there were the broadest differences between the respondents who majored in street dance and the people in general in awareness of the necessity of street dance education as dance education.
Seventh, how they looked at the personal, artistic, social and cultural value of street dance was analyzed, and the respondents who majored in street dance took the best view of the personal and cultural value of street dance.
Eighth, their opinions on the development of street dance were analyzed, and the most dominant opinion of all the three groups was that full-fledged street dance experts should be fostered to lay the foundation for the development of street dance as a discipline.
The above-mentioned findings indicated that street dance education was improperly provided by nonspecialists, and that certificates of qualifications related to street dance were granted for commercial purposes. To remedy the situations, it's urgently required to take measures to step up the establishment of professional street dance education institutions and the development of regular curriculums.
