In this study, we developed a procedure to prepare various natural dyes powder : black natural dyes from gallnut and sappan wood, blue natural dye from indigo, red natural dyes from cochineal, lac, beet red, and monascus, and yellow natural dyes from safflower yellow, gardenia yellow, β-carotene, paprika, kaoliang and cacao. Chemical structures of obtained natural dyes were identified using FT-IR spectroscopy.
The leather was dyed using various natural dyes powder prepared in this study. The effects of dye concentration, dyeing time and temperature on the light fastness, rubbing fastness, color difference and K/S values were investigated to find the best natural dye on eco-dyeing of the leather. In addition, a marble surface treatment was performed to improve the abrasion resistance and color properties of marble leather.
In black color dyeing, the best color and fastness were obtained when gallnut and sappenwood with 1.0% o.w.l Fe-mordant fixative were used. The complex compounds of the fixative and dye that had not been reacted on leather surface were bound together as an increased amount of the anionic fatliquor agent was added. It was found that use of 12% o.w.l produced best result in the absorption of dyes and mordant agent.
In blue color dyeing, use of indigo dye at 5.0% o.w.l produced an appropriate result in leather dyeing process because use of indigo dye of over 6.0% o.w.l caused change in blue and dark blue colors due to high increase in K/S values. Indigo, a vat dye, characteristically showed excellent lightfastness stability, but it's levelling effect on leather was inferior.
In red color dyeing, K/S value generally increased as higher concentrations of cochineal, monascus, lac or beet red were used. However, such increase rate was substantially lowered when more than 5.0% o.w.l was used, which led us to determine the optimal dye concentration to be 5.0% o.w.l. Dyeing time of 100 minutes was found optimal since K/S value almost did not increase after 100 minutes during the measurement of K/S value versus dyeing time. Use of cochineal 5.0% o.w.l resulted in 9.18RP and use of lac 5.0% o.w.l resulted in 9.52RP. These results in colors were closed to red color. Their △E* value, which were levelling property indicator of leather, were 0.56 and 0.13, respectively, showing superior characteristic.
In yellow color dyeing, K/S value generally increased as higher dye concentration was used. Dyeing time of 100 minutes was found optimal since K/S value almost did not increase after 100 minutes during the measurement of K/S value versus dyeing time. The safflower yellow showed high levelling capability with △E* of 1.39 compared with the results from dyeing at other temperatures and high surface absorption characteristic with K/S value of 16.62 at 45℃ dyeing temperature. It showed inferior levelling quality (△E*) and protein denaturation at higher dyeing temperature. Considering the levelling characteristic and the stability of color(H), rubbing fastness, and lightfastness, use of 5% o.w.l produced best result in dyeing process of yellow color leather. In marbling process, which is a type of leather surface treatment process, use of gallnut at lower than 0.5% concentration resulted in improved organic pigment spreadability due to separation of water layer and organic layer. Higher content of dye in water layer caused increased interfacial surface energy of water layer. And this decreased spreadability of pigment, which then led to non-occurrence of marble effect characterized by the separation of distinct water and organic layers. Comparing the results of dyeing with and without leather surface coating, dyed crust without artificial coating with binder or wax on the surface showed strong absorption and binding power. The infiltration of pigment into the leather surface improved the quality of raw hide and lead to the production of amorphous marbled leather. Marbling processes using the leather dyed with natural dyes of indigo, gallnut, and safflower resulted in the production of marbled leather with high light fastness, washing fastness, heating fastness, rubbing fastness, and abrasion resistance. Their abrasion resistances were even higher than those produced from ordinary leather coating process using spray and roll coater. The natural surface effect that could not be achieved with conventional coating methods.
