This study investigated how negative feedback influences children’s achievement behaviors depending on the type of goal orientations. We also examined the relationship between parenting characteristics and mother’s attitudes and the children’s goal orientations. The children were classified into the ‘learning goal-oriented group’ or ‘performance goal-oriented group’ according to their behavior after going through experimentally manipulated failures and successes in an experimental situation. Study 1, explored the influence of 4~5-year-olds’(n=86) goal orientations (performance goal vs. learning goal) and negative feedback (person-criticism vs. process-criticism; labeling vs. non-labeling) on their affect, task persistence and capacity persistence. We found that perfor-goal-oriented children showed more negative affect against feedback after failure than did learning-goal-oriented children when both personal criticism and procedural criticism was suggested, and that both groups showed more negative affect after receiving person-criticism than process-criticism. However, there was no interaction effect between goal orientation and type of criticism (person-criticism vs. process-criticism). In addition, perform-goal-oriented children tended to experience more negative emotions against feedback after failure than did learning-goal-oriented children in both labeling conditions of labeling and non-labeling, and both group exhibited more negative emotions under the labeling condition than the non-labeling condition. futhermore, the interaction between goal orientation and labeling presence was marginally significant. In Study 2, we examined, by using 60 mother-chind pairs, the relationship between intelligence-change belief and the psychological control level of mothers and goal orientation of children. We found that children whose mothers have intelligence-increase-belief, were more likely to be learning-goal-oriented than perform-goal-oriented. Moreover, children whose mothers have intelligence-fixed-belief, were less inclined to continue with the task after receiving negative feedback. However, there was no significant relationship between the psychological control level of mothers and the other variable. This study measured children’s goal orientations through experimental manipulation, by considering the effect of negative feedback and interaction, which is a departure from existing studies that mainly focused on praise and positive feedback.
