Graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer of carbon atoms tightly packed into a honeycomb lattice. Because of its fascinating optical, mechanical and electrical properties, the application to versatile areas such as transparent electrodes, electrochromic devices, gas detectors, transistors, etc. have been studied. Over the past few years, there have been many efforts to utilize these outstanding properties of graphene for micro- and macroscopic applications such as micro-sensor applications and transparent conducting films useful for flexible/stretchable electronics. However, the scale and the quality graphene need to be further enhanced for practical applications by developing more efficient synthesis, transfer, and doping methods. In this study, Graphene was synthesized on copper (Cu) substrates at different conditions by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method with methane (CH4) and hydrogen gas in vacuum furnace system. We changed the growth temperature with various gas flow rate and composition rate, and the graphene films were transferred to SiO2/Si wafers for further characterization by optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The etching properties of the graphene under hydrogen (H2) atmosphere was analyzed. The ammonia (NH3) gas sensing properties of the transferred graphene was also examined. Graphene began to formed on the Cu foil at the temperature between 700-800℃ and the domains grow faster as the temperature increased. Since the synthesis of graphene follows the nucleation and growth mechanism, synthesis at higher temperature (~1000℃) resulted in better graphenes with higher electrical conductivity and bigger domain size. Concerning the etching properties of the graphene under H2 atmosphere at high temperatures, the edge of the graphene showed the highest etching rate and followed by the boundary and internal area of graphene domain. This was explained by the carbon-carbon bonding strength and carbon-hydrogen reactivity The graphene was transferred on the Au/Ni electrode patterns, and the effect of Ammonia (NH3) gas flowing on the electrical characteristics of the sensor device was monitored at room temperature. The adsorption of NH3 molecules on graphene increased the electric resistance of the device. In comparison with the conventional metal-oxide NH3 gas sensor which is operating at high temperatures, the graphene NH3 gas sensor which is operating at room temperature is very advantageous in sensor application.
