The following study attempted to measure consumer awareness of cleansing methods by skin type, cleansing side effects and usage by the working population. Professionals (general office workers and teachers) in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province first went through a preliminary survey and a final main survey. Subjects were in ages from 20 to 54. First 50 preliminary surveys were given to 50 subjects for three weeks from September 1st, 2012 to September 20th, and later collected for analysis. For the secondary and main survey, 100 subjects were given 100 surveys for two weeks from September 25th to October 10th of this year, and later collected for analysis.
Subjects who participated in this survey were mostly in their 30s and 40s. In terms of their job category, office workers made up 50.5%, teachers and faculty made up 43.4% and housewives and other professionals made up 3%, respectively. In terms of age distribution, people from 35 to 39 made up 28.3%, people from 25 to 39 made up 25.3%, people from 40 to 44 made up 21.2%, and people from 30 to 34 made up 15.2%. When asked if they were using cleansing-related products, 89.9% answered yes. Further analysis into subjects' skin type, all the subjects with oily skin responded yes to using cleansing-related products.
Upon examination of cleansing product type, 'foam cleansers' showed the highest usage of 26.4%, 'oil' showed 19.9%, 'cream' resulted 19.4%, 'gel' usage was 11.9%, 'milk' read 11.4%, 'water' showed 9.0%, and 'cleansing tissue' made up 2.0%. In terms of cleansing methods, 51.0% of the subjects responded to be using cleansing lotion or oil first for removal and foam cleansers or soap afterwards. 32.7% responded that they only use foam cleansers. 14.3% of the respondents said that they utilize point up make-up remover and cleansing lotion or oil first, and then utilize cleansing foams afterwards. In terms of the reasons for using cleansing products, majority of the respondents regardless of skin type answered that 'they started after being satisfied using samples provided.' Analysis of the surveys also showed majority of the subjects in all skin types cleansed twice a day, and once a day showed the second most response. Some subjects cleansed three times a day, but very minimal number of responses showed four times a day. Further examination of respondents who said they only cleansed once a day, dry skin, oily skin and combination skin responded 'wash at night' the most. For those who answered cleansing twice a day, 'wash in the morning' showed the most response among all skin types. Additionally, most subjects surveyed answered to have washed their face with 'lukewarm water.' When subjects were asked if they knew their skin type, subjects who had oily skin and those who had dry skin all responded yes. Among those who had combination skin, 95.8% of the respondents said yes. Subjects were also asked about the degree of adverse skin reaction when cleansing products were used in combination. Dry skin type answered 'slight skin reaction' the most. For subjects with oily skin type, answers 'slight skin reaction' and 'moderate skin reaction' showed the most response. For combination skin types, 'moderate skin reaction' showed the most response. When only one type of cleansing product was used, analysis showed that subjects with oily skin responded 'moderate skin reaction' the most, and subjects with dry skin answered 'no skin reaction'. Subjects with combination skin type said 'moderate skin reaction' the most. When subjects were asked if there were any side effects of using cleansing products, both dry skin types and combination skin types said 'soap' as a product with the most side effect. When asked which type of cleansing product was the most satisfactory, most participants regardless of skin type answered 'foam cleanser.' For subjects who did not know their skin type, there were more subjects who answered 'cleansing oil' than any other skin type.
By summarizing and analyzing the survey results, the importance and complications of cleansing and skin care is well understood by consumers. In terms of cleansing methods, foam cleansing method was mostly widely used by the subjects for its easiness of use and effectiveness. The results intuitively make sense considering that most of the surveyed subjects were office workers who are always on the go and need a cleansing solution that's quick and easy.
