In contemporary performing art, 'movement' is functioning as very important visual language. This study was progressed focusing on which role it functions in contemporary performance and on what about expression and effect, as for the moving scenery that functions as an element of forming theatre in performance by expressing this movement. Ultimately, this study can be found significance in a sense of illuminating the expressional value in the moving scenery of contemporary performance in the aesthetic and functional aspect and of being able to discuss even future orientation in the performing art field through this. Tendency in contemporary scenography can be analyzed as follows. First of all, in the component-based aspect of theatre, it ended in formal element that shows background of drama before. On the other hand, with reaching the modern times, it functions as important field of forming general environment available for signifying message of delivering theatre by reflecting a character's psychological status. In this sense, there is difference. Also, in the aspect of the expressional mode in theatre, the scenography was biased to pictorial technique, thereby having formed a little flat stage. On the other hand, in the contemporary scenography, the dimensional stage was formed by utilizing lighting instead of paints in coloring. In addition, the image available for freely using the moving image with real time has much more flexible variability than a physical change in pictorial or dimensional scenery. Thus, an element of light such as expanding the range of utilizing the scenery came to play a very important role in contemporary scenography. Above all, in the aspect of embodying image in theatre, the modern people prefer the dynamic image than static image according to a social change. A dynamic change in cultural life is accelerated. Even the stage space came to show the aspect that is highlighted the dynamic propensity with escaping from static propensity. This can be understood as tendency of scenography that is shown with being indicated the movement of aiming to accept modern people's needs for strong spectacle and stimulation in theatre. Even out of contemporary performing art that has this tendency, especially, the musical theatre, which is the dramatic-art mode of having all of popularity, commercialization, and playfulness, is a field of being more strongly demanded the moving element in scenography owing to spectacle and musical element. Musical theatre is a field of responding sensitively to historical change in culture. In the scenography of musical theatre that high technology is adopted quickly and experimented for making more abundant and diverse attractions available for satisfying expectation of the audience, the application and effect on the moving scenery can be examined better than any dramatic-art mode. In particular, the Korean musical theatre grew quickly in the face of having short history because of having been about 20 years since it was settled as cultural business, thereby producing own creative musical in high level. It is noticeable because diverse outcomes are being made in performance by displaying the developed technology and creative imagination and by positively utilizing the moving scenery. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to consider significance that the moving scenery has in the contemporary performing art. It focused on understanding its expression and effect by analyzing diverse cases related to the moving scenery that was shown in Korea's contemporary musical theatre. Dividing this largely into three categories, they are as follows. Firstly, there are expression and effect of dynamic element according to a place. Dynamism in the moving scenery becomes essential element for forming space available for expressing dramatic tension and spectacle like battlefield. Also, in expressing space of being demanded fluid image like the sea and river, the moving scenery becomes the most useful tool. In addition, the image has more flexible variability than the scenography, which was composed of painting or dimension in implementing the moving image, thereby contributing to expanding the range of expressing stage space. Also, it expresses image in virtual space through a digitalized sense, thereby coming to have effect of delivering visual language in aesthetically high level. Secondly, there are expression and effect according to a scene change. In traditional performance, the scene change functioned as the process of making new scene through a dark change. On the other hand, the current scene change came to function itself as the dramatic scene by being made into 'appearing change'. Accordingly, the moving scenery is creating aesthetic effect at the same time through formativeness that is made with a change in movement as well as the functional and operational effect that connects a number of scenes quickly and smoothly. Also, the scenery is changed naturally according to the consecutively playing music, thereby highlighting the dramatic emotion, which is converted by the scene change through music, as well as being possibly changed without interrupting the audience's immersion in theatre. Finally, it is the effect of expressing dynamic element according to music. Music in musical theatre is important element available for leading the development in drama like playscript and for expressing a character's psychology or conflict. In musical theatre, the impression in theatre comes to be maximized by expressing this musical element through the moving scenery. Also, as music reaches the peak, a dynamic change in space comes to play a role of delivering the stronger stimulation and impression to the audience.
