Amid the elevating education quality of South Korea, universities are increasingly interested in improving the acoustic performance of their lecture rooms to ensure quality educational environment. University lecture-room acoustic performance is essential for students' enhanced learning conditions, class concentration and efficiency, requiring more diversified studies and researches. However, we still have no clear data on acoustic performance when lecture rooms are full, since it has been assessed only in vacant lecture rooms, Acoustic simulations are used to estimate full-seat acoustic performance but they produce only unreliable results due to the lack of clear criteria for university lecture-room modeling and acoustic absorption data when full-seat. Plus, students' subjective acoustic evaluation is also important but there is no standardized languages or terminologies appropriate for such subjective acoustic assessment in university lecture rooms. Such acoustic performance is also subject to the status of seats, calling for yet additional studies on the comparison of such subjective responses. From this perspective, we carried out on-the-spot assessment according to students' clothing conditions and seat occupancy ratio to analyze university lecture-room acoustic performance and ran acoustic simulations to set up criteria for lecture-room simulation modelling and find out an optimum acoustic absorption ratio depending upon clothing conditions. To assess subjective acoustic performance in lecture rooms, we sorted out appropriate evaluation languages and conducted Psycho-acoustic Experiment for students using lecture rooms and compared their subjective acoustic performances. By adopting the above-mentioned methods, this study found as follows. 1. The on-the-spot evaluation of diverse university lecture-room acoustic performances discovered that the sound pressure level (SPL) remained steady regardless of the clothing conditions and seat occupancy rates. Reverberation time clocked under winter clothing condition was 0.1sec shorter than that under summer clothing condition at 500㎐. D50 and RASTI, too, showed 3.8%, and 1.5% longer in winter clothing condition than summer clothing. This is viewed because winter clothes use thicker fabrics than summer clothes and warp around the whole body, thus increasing the sound absorption ability per person. 2. The effect of acoustic simulation modeling measured under the condition of vacant lecture-room seats, modeling methods regarding the floor size show huge errors. In this sense, more sophisticated and accurate modeling is required. Plus, the currently-used data of sound absorption under full-seat condition were found to be improper for using in university lecture-room acoustic simulation. So it is effective to estimated an optimum sound absorption rate for each clothing conditions by using acoustic simulation based on actually measured reverberation time. 3. For subjective acoustic-performance evaluation of university lecture rooms, we worked to standardize evaluation terminologies and found they were grouped into 4 types. Accordingly, we identified 8 most appropriate terminologies; “Accurate”, “Clear”, “Evident”, “Bright”, “Lucid”, “Strong”, “Volume” and “Intimacy”, These standardized terminologies are viewed appropriate in comparing subjective evaluation of university lecture-room acoustic performance. 4. Subjective evaluation according to seat occupancy status measured with the 8 terminologies above showed higher scores for “Accurate”, “Clear”, “Evident”, “Bright”, “Lucid” and “Intimacy” when seats were full; and for “Strong” and “Volume” when seats were vacant. It is viewed that when seats were full, reverberation time is optimum for students to listen to a lecture, improving their acoustic evaluation.
