This study started with the idea that understanding the origin of tea culture which sure is a means to improve quality of modern people's health and life and comparing and analyzing the origin with modern tea culture are very important in the aspect of pursuing and preserving traditional culture. Especially, understanding tea ceremony of the Joseon Dynasty in the aspects of transmission and history of tea culture can become a link between tradition and modern culture. Thus, by considering tea ceremony among many ceremonies of the Joseon Dynasty, how tea ceremony influenced formation of tea culture in during the Joseon Dynasty and how it is connected to modern tea culture. This study comprises overall Korean tea ceremonies, and then, tea ceremony of the Joseon Dynasty is studied mainly in two big categories: royal tea ceremony and common tea ceremony. Unfortunately, there were not enough reference for tea ceremony of the Joseon Dynasty, and most of the reference was about royal tea ceremony and not many about common tea ceremony. It is probably because many documents were lost during many wars and battles in the history. It is also because the policy of reinforcing Confucianism and suppressing Buddhism caused decadence of tea that was very popular during the Goryeo Dynasty, and therefore related tea ceremony did not prosper. To overcome this problem and to achieve the goal of this study, Korean history of tea ceremony which was not studied much in the past was studied from tea cultures and tea ceremonies before the Joseon Dynasty to find background cultures. Especially, considering importance of Buddhist tea culture and tea ceremony which were the ideological mainstream during the Three Kingdom Period, the Unified Silla Period and the Goryeo Dynasty, relation between Buddhist ceremonies and tea culture was intensively inquired. Also, relation between Confucian culture, the mainstream culture of the Joseon Dynasty, and tea, influence of tea to royal ceremonies, position of tea in such ceremonies and characteristics of royal tea ceremony were considered, and they were compared with characteristics of common tea ceremony. Tea cannot be studied without considering lifestyle, and the lifestyle shows life and conventions of the people. Therefore, learning about common tea life and common cultures can lead to essence of the tea culture. With such issues, the study was carried out as described below. In the Three Kingdom Period, nobility and high monks enjoyed tea life. Nobility and high monks in Goguryeo wall paintings are drinking tea, Choi Chiwon gave tea to his parents as a gift, and hwarangs drank tea while they were travelling various mountains and streams to train their mind and body. In the Goryeo Dynasty, the literary circles trank tea and composed tea poems with their visitors or monks of temples. They praised tea and considered values of daseonilmi, meaning drinking tea and awakening from Zen meditation are same. Also, in tea drinking parties, they sometimes enjoyed their tastes for arts with alcoholic drinks and geomungo, but they always tried not to become drunk or ill-mannered. Tea cafes started to appear, and common public was able to buy and drink tea. The life of ilsandabansa, meaning matters of everyday occurrence like eating means and drinking tea, started. In the early Joseon Dynasty, the tea culture of the Goryeo Dynasty continued. With the increased demand of tea, life of common people became even harder, and some government officers actually cultivated tea plantations by themselves to replace public imposts. Some tea lovers continued their tea life and artistic sublimation by being satisfied with their life with integrity and simplicity. However, compared to the Goryeo Dynasty, tea culture was not as prevalent. After Japanese Invation of Korea in 1592 and the Manchu War of 1636, tea culture gradually declined, and it was hard to see common people enjoy tea. It only continued in wall paintings, memorial documents and tea folk songs. Tea ceremony culture of the Goryeo Dynasty continued to Joseon Dynasty, but it gradually declined. Tea culture of literary persons which formed a strong part of tea culture was not as prospering as it was in during the Goryeo Dynasty. However, simple and tasteful tea life was continued privately or in small groups. Especially, with the influence of Confucianism, tea lovers enjoyed honest poverty and complacency by drinking tea. Dignified friendship of Dasan Jeong Yakyong, Choui Jang Uisun and Chusa Kim Jeonghi related to poetry, caligraphy, painting and tea is the representative case that shows desirable mind of tea people. Zennist Choui built Iljiam and cultivated tea trees around. He made tea in the stream while his Zen meditation. He was a close friend to literary persons including Dasan and Chusa. Because he was a monk, he did not make a group of poetry group, but he joined poetry groups of yangban to share tea culture with the literary persons. Sometimes, he joined Okgyeongsanbang, a poetry group of jungin to drink tea and compose poems. He was engaged in both Buddhist life and secular society. He was a monk of poetry and tea. With the influence of Confucianism and turbulent wars, tea culture of the Joseon Dynasty started declining, but tea culture did not disappear with the help of monks. Monks continued tea culture and wrote documents about tea. In conclusion, tea ceremony of the Joseon Dynasty declined compared to the Goryeo Dynasty, but tea ceremony influenced by Confucianism played the role of transmitting and inheriting declined tea culture of the Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, it is necessary to spread tea ceremony instead of using alcoholic drinks in common ancestral rites. For a long time in the history, Korean ancestral rites was a tea ceremony not a alcoholic drink ceremony. Even with changes that occurred in the Joseon Dynasty, the word tea ceremony still exists. Also, since ancestral rites are of holy nature, using tea with serenity and dignity that were even presented to Buddhist temples instead of alcoholic drinks that confuse human mind will heighten virtues of ancestor worship. Due to materialistic life of modern days, people are becoming more and more cold-hearted, and people are worried about that. If tea culture that continued in various aspects of Korean traditions is reinforced and strengthened, our future will be brighter.
