Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the story telling program on the self efficacy and self expression of the elderly. Self efficacy and self expression are both necessary in order to allow the elderly to be the main agents in their lives and to allow them to build self-confidence, which is necessary for problem solving.
The design of the experiment used in this study was the "non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design." The program was applied only to the experimental group, which was compared to the control group both before and after the experiment. The story telling program was set up as an independent variable, and self efficacy and self expression as dependent variables, in order to find out the effect of self efficacy. Self efficacy was divided into low factors, general self efficacy, and social self efficacy; and standard self efficacy were used. The self expression effect was divided into low factors, voice and non-verbal; and used standard measuring tools for self expression.
The results of the research were as follows:
Firstly, it was found that the story telling program was quite effective in improving the self efficacy of the elderly. Comparing levels of self efficacy in the elderly before and after the story telling program showed that the experimental group had increased levels of self efficacy. This result was more meaningful by an effective probability of 17.957, and a significance level of p<.001.
The story telling program was shown to be effective in improving the general self efficacy and social efficacy in the low factors of self efficacy, but not in improving physical self efficacy. In conclusion, the experience of self-confidence and sense of accomplishment caused by repeated narrative practice and by the presentation of stories in the story telling program promoted self efficacy. It seems that social self efficacy also was promoted by the feelings of sympathy from the team and by being supported by the members of the group during the experience of members looking at themselves in the literature and by the activity of withdrawing into their inner world.
Secondly, it was proved that the story telling was quite effective in promoting self expression in the elderly comparing levels of self expression in the elderly before and after the story telling program showed that the experimental group had increased levels of self expression. This result was more meaningful by an effective probability of 8.343 and a significance level of p<.001.
The story telling program was effective in improving both the low factors of self expression and non-verbal self expression, but was not effective in improving the voice aspects of self expression.
It seems that the elderly's self expression was improved by their being able to look into themselves and build problem solving skills while telling the story, trying to understand it, and by empathizing with the situation. In conclusion, the program was effective in improving non-verbal expression through their understanding of the story and personalities, and the circumstances of the characters in the story.
On the other hand, even though voice was expected to be the most improved self expression factor through story telling, it was not. It is assumed that it is difficult for the elderly to change their voices since they have been used to their voices throughout their long lives, and also due to the lack of confidence in their tone of voice, and the short term of the program. This was in spite of their making great efforts to alter their voices.
All these results from this study show that the story telling program has a positive effect on the self efficacy and self expression of the elderly. Therefore, the story telling program can increase the chance for the elderly to lead positive and successful lives and also offers the elderly job opportunities as story tellers.
