The purpose of this study was to examine psychosocial factors of suicide and recovery experiences of adolescents who had attempted suicide through in-depth interviews and an qualitative analysis. Based on the research results, a treatment program of suicidal behaviors was developed and its effectiveness on depression, suicidal thoughts and psychological well-being was verified. In-depth interviews from those adolescents were transcribed and analyzed by CQR research method, obtaining objectivity by deriving results after discussing and consenting from various perspectives. Based on the data, FGI results and needs assessment from experts in that field, a treatment program for the adolescents who showed suicidal behaviors was developed. Effectiveness of the program was also verified after being conducted. Three research questions were studied: In the research 1, 7 adolescents were interviewed who had attempted suicide more than twice but after that not tried suicide for 6 months. They were asked what they had experienced and how they had gotten over the suicide attempt. The in-depth interviews were conducted two or three times, transcribed and analyzed by CQR research method. From the result of the research 1, 21 domains were elicited concerning 1)What are the personalities and characteristics of adolescents who attempted suicide?, 2)What are the positive life experiences?, 3)What are the negative life experiences?, 4)How to deal with problems?, 5)What are the experiences of suicidal thoughts?, 6)Any changes before and after suicidal attempt? and 7)What are the overcoming experiences?
In the research 2, to develop a suicidal behavior treatment program, the process of planning, constructing, conducting and evaluating was done. In the stage of a program planning, based on a literature review, needs assessment and FGI from experts in that field as well as in-depth interviews from the adolescents who had attempted suicide done in the research 1 an object and a goal were set up. In the stage of a program constructing, a treatment program model was developed. And contents of the program were made up such as deriving a constituting principle and drawing an outline by organizing program elements. In the stage of conducting and evaluating, the program pre-research were revised and complemented from reviews of group members, suggestions and expert ratings. Through these stages, the treatment program of suicidal behaviors was developed. This program consisted of 10 sessions with constituting areas: psychological support, viewing time, self-esteem, self-control, level of hope, expressing emotions and steps: viewing, recognizing, practicing.
In the research 3, experimental group, comparative group and control group were made up to compare changes according to a measuring time before, after and follow-up conducting the program. The research 3 revealed that the suicidal behavior treatment program influenced significantly (1)on decreasing depression containing negative thoughts and difficulties in performing, (2)on decreasing thoughts to commit suicide and (3)on enhancing psychological well-being such as self-acceptance, controlling and purposes in life.
The findings of this study were consolidated as follows. Through the qualitative analysis of suicidal behaviors and recovery, this study revealed interaction among characteristics factor, environment factor and psychological factor and help to understand deeply how the adolescents got over their suicidal behaviors. And based on these outcomes, the treatment program helpful to them was developed and its effect was verified. In conclusion, this study is expected to give practical help in lessening suicidal behaviors of adolescents who show suicidal behaviors. Limitations to the current study and recommendations for future research are discussed.
