The purpose of this study is to identify relationship between job stress and sleep quality of dental hygienists, and to provide base data for satisfying job performances and health conditions with sleep quality improvement which could be made through adequate stress management. The subjects of this study were 158 dental hygienists working at dental clinics, dental hospitals and general hospitals located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The scales used for this study are as follows; The survey carried out for the study to measure dental hygienists' stress(Y.H,Song 1990, H.S.Park 2000) and PSQI(Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Buysee, 1989) in translation version(Kim, 2000) were used for this study. Collected research materials were analyzed by descriptive statistics such as frequency analysis. The correlation analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression method were used to find relevance of job stress and sleep quality. As a result of descriptive analysis, 59 persons (37.3%) are relevant to the group with sound sleep and 99 persons (62.7%) come under the group with sleep disorder. The average PSQI scored is 5.59, and it represents sleep quality of dental hygienists is in low condition. It has shown that job stress had a positive correlation with ages of the subjects as part of general feature. Sleep quality has shown statistically significant correlations according to frequency of physical training, frequency of drinking and status of diseases. Among the factors of job stress, tasks in charge and professional roles represent significant correlation with sleep quality. In the multiple regression analysis, it has shown correlations with sleep quality when they have higher professional stress, more drinking frequency and more diseases under treatment. In conclusion, sleep quality of dental hygienists is in the level of below the average, and it is dependent upon individual's health related features and stress from professional roles.
