The purposes of this study were to develop the young children physical activity program on the basis of brain-based education, and to investigate the effect of this program on learning-related social skills, emotional stability, and attention.
Two research questions for this study were as follow:
1) How was the development of the young children physical activity program on the basis of brain-based education going?
2) What were the effects of the young children physical activity program on the basis of brain-based education?
Research was conducted for developing the young children physical activity program based on the brain-based education, related to research question 1. Process 1 was a basic stage of preliminary research for the program development. Theoretical literature of the brain-based education, NURI Curriculum for the 5 years old, young children physical activities etc. was reviewed; and the survey for teachers’ perceptions and the actual conditions of the young children physical activities as well as need assessment were conducted for developing the program. In addition, basic directions for the program development were established by the specialists council. Process 2 was to design the program and to draw up the proposal for a model that played a major role in the program development. Specific criteria for objectives, contents, teaching-learning methods, teacher’s role, educational evaluation were established, and specific activities were constructed. Process 3 was associated with the preliminary research for qualifying the program. Circulating system for checking the field application possibility and problems and for verifying reliability and validity of the research instruments was performed by the specialists council. Document for overall revision and activities of the program was producted. Then the final version of the program was developed through the above processes.
Research question 2 was related to investigate the effects of the young children physical activity program on the basis of brain-based education. A total of 49 5-year-old children at A and H kindergartens in Gyeonggi-Do(24 children in the experimental group, and 25 children in the comparative group) was selected. 24 lessons of the preschooler’s physical activity program were applied to the experimental group, and a general physical activities were applied to the comparative group for 11 weeks, from November 27, 2011 to February 13, 2012. Kwak, A-Jung(2006)’s Korean version of K-LRSS was used for the effects of the program on young children learning-related social skills; and emotional stability and attention were measured by an electroencephalograph(QEEN-4 System). Pre-to-Post test were conducted. Data were analyzed by utilizing SPSS WIN 19. 0 Program for running ANCOVA to figure out the differences between the experimental group and the comparative group.
The main results of the research on the effects of the program on preschooler’s learning-related social skills, emotional stability and attention were as follows:
First, the young children physical activity program on the basis of brain-based education was effective in young children learning-related social skills, emotional stability, and attention. There were significant differences between the experimental group and the comparative group in four sub-areas of the young children learning-
related social skills, proficiency, self-regulation, self-assertiveness, and adaptation. The results of post-test showed that the emotional stability and the attention of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the comparative one by the brain-wave test. This program had influences on their learning-related social skills, emotional stability, and attention.
Overall, the young children physical activity program on the basis of brain-based education was effective in the young children learning-related social skills, emotional stability, and attention. Teachers could improve their brain-based teaching abilities and effective interaction skills by applying this program in their educational fields. Also, parents could aware of the positive influences of the brain-based physical activities on the emotion, social skills, and learning areas. Further, this research had a significance in facilitating brain-based research and whole-person education in the early life-span.
