The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of damage to major trees in scenic spots, focusing on locational environment, health and soil environment and then suggest the management practices for the major trees in scenic spots. For this study, an analysis has been conducted through a literary analysis and a situation analysis in conjunction with the interviews to complement the information needed for this study. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the results of correlation analysis demonstrated among aboveground tree health items, siphon transformation, twig death and bark death were closely associated with tree vigor. Thus, there is a need to seek the management practices for siphon transformation, twig death, bark death and compaction. In particular, for the region receiving a lot of visitors, it needs to take prompt measures against dead twigs, dead trees, the manage the safety of visitors and facilities. Second, regarding soil environment, compaction has a high correlation soil. The trees exposed to stamping region in 15 candidates for Byeulseo scenic spots accounted for 64.2%. The trees around the trails are expected to be damaged continuously due to an increase of visitor, which will lead to a weakening of tree vigor. Thus, it is urgent to take the measures to protect against it and the specific conservation methods are as follows. As a way to create a surface layer that can tolerate compaction, it is required to consider planting herbal plants resistant to soil compaction or installing, when necessary, supplementary facilities by adjusting the traffic line of visitors. Furthermore regarding the surface layer that went through the soil loss, it is desirable to perform mulching with natural materials, or plant moss or ground cover plants. Third, in Byeulseo scenic spots, there are a lot of ponds and streams. Thus, the growth decline of surrounding trees due to the excess moisture in the soil was as high as 19.2%. As a result, there is an urgent need of the measures against the excess moisture in the soil and the following management measures can be suggested, First, there is a need to install a pipe vertically at 0.5-1.0m from the sore bank to facilitate the regular measurement of soil moisture and inspection; Second, due to summer downpours which is the seasonal characteristics of Korea, the sewers are likely to be blocked by leaves or floating matters, which might increase the water level. This results in excessive moisture in the soil, which is fatal to trees. Thus, there is a need to set up the management plans for sewers or shore banks before and after the rainy season. Fourth, there is a need to establish long-term management policies and write the tree management manual according to the regional characteristics on the basis of the recognition of the importance of trees in Byeulseo scenic spots. The result of the analysis of the management state of major trees in the target spots demonstrated the surgical treatment for the damaged was inappropriate and thus the management measures can be suggested as follows. Fifth, trees, coupled with building, are one element of the landscape and are also the important elements from the perspective of living organisms. Thus, the continued publicity and education are needed to make the public recognize the importance of the conservation of trees. If taking measures for old trees delays, the self-recovery ability of trees weakens, which will result in secondary safety issues. Thus, there is a need to secure the management budget to prevent the safety of visitors, conserve the values of scenic spots, conduct the studies on the conservation of trees, and make manuals for systematic management. This study has the significance in that it has investigated the problems through the survey of the state of major trees growing around Byeulseo scenic spots and then suggested management practices; and futhermore identified the importance of the shore bank management after the creation of ponds not only in Byeulseo but also on royal gardens, streams and modern landscaping. On the other hand, the study has the limitations in that in-depth survey was not accomplished due to the legal constraints in the cultural heritage protection zones and there was a lack of probability in the course of deriving the conclusions by integrating the results of the analysis by individual tree. Thus, a wide range of approaches and attempts regarding the specific management measures for the trees in Byeulseo scenic spots and in-depth follow-up studies are needed.
