This study was conducted to identify changes in EEG oscillation, the correlations between EEG and EMG and upper-extremity motions when children with spastic cerebral palsy perform the reaching of their arm on the non-dominant side. The subjects were randonly allocated to either the action observation physical training (AOPT) group that performed task training after the observation of their arm action or the physical training (PT) group that performed the arm-related task training. The subjects of AOPT group was instructed to observe a video for 3 minutes, and then performed 3 sets of 10-min physical training session, 3 times per week for 6 weeks (total of 18 sessions). The physical training protocol of the PT group same with the AOPT group. An EEG equipment was used to examine ERD and ERS of EEG with lapse of time. The correlation was measured based on EEG and EMG. To measure function of upper limbs, box and block tests (BBT) and pediatric motor activity log (PMAL) were done based on a scale for children’s activity. To measure changes in ERS and ERD of the two groups before and after the exercise, repeated measures two-way ANOVA were conducted, and Bonferroni was done for a post-hoc test. To examine changes before and after the exercise both between the groups and within each group, independent sample t-test and matched pair t-test were conducted; Pearson test was done to examine a correlation between eeg and upper limb muscles; independent sample t-test and matched pair t-test were done to see changes in BBT and PMAL between the groups and within each group. The tests results were analyzed at a significance level (α) of .05. The analysis yielded the following outcomes:
1. EEG, ERS showed larger increases of relative power values after training in the AOPT group than in the PT group. EEG, ERD showed larger suppression in relative power values after training in the AOPT group than in the PT group. 2. The AOPT group showed higher correlations between EEG, ERS and non-dominant side upper extremity muscles after training than the PT group. The AOPT group showed higher correlations between EEG, ERD and non-dominant side upper extremity muscles after training than the PT group. 3. The BBT evaluation of the non-dominant side upper extremity significantly increased after training than before the training in the AOPT group and the PT group. There was no significant difference between the two groups before the training and the value more significantly increased in the AOPT group after the training. In PMAL evaluation both AOU and QOM significantly increased after training than before the training in the AOPT group. However, the two groups did not show any significant differences before and after the training. These findings suggest that, as a rehabilitation intervention method for spastic cerebral palsy children with who are capable of performs upper limb function independently, AOPT to have the children observe the upper limb task related video before applying PT on the related task was more effective than only applying upper limb task related PT.
