This paper classifies pit dwellings in the Gyeonggi-do region in the Joseon dynasty based on their forms, makes a chronology about them, in turn analyzes the course of their changes, and then explores their functions in terms of their distribution and the characteristics of settlements in the Joseon dynasty. Based on their cooking and heating facilities, the dwellings have been form-classified into A pit dwellings, where a furnace is installed, and B pit dwellings, where a hypocaust is installed. A pit dwellings are further classified into A1 dwellings, where a furnace is installed on the wall, A2 dwellings, where it is installed on the corner of a wall, and A3, where two furnace are identified. B pit dwellings are also further classified into B1 dwellings, where a partial hypocaust is installed, B2 dwellings, where a full hypocaust is installed in the overall inner space, and B3 dwellings, where a full hypocaust is installed in a partitioned space. On the basis of the excavated porcelains, the chronology distinguishes the early Joseon dynasty from the late 14th century to the early 15th century, the middle Joseon dynasty from the mid 15th century to the mid 16th century, and the late Joseon dynasty from the late 16th century to the late 18th century. As for the course of changes, it has been found out that the A1 and A2 forms were continuously used from the early to late Joseon dynasty, A3 and B1 forms were from the mid to late Joseon dynasty, and B2 and B3 forms occurred only in the late Joseon dynasty. As for their distributive states, it has been found out that there were cases where the single distribution had special functions related to construction sites, graves, and productive facilities. The settlements in dense distribution are divided into those settlements continuously formed and spread from the early to late Joseon dynasty, and the other settlements with multiple dense pit dwellings that appeared intensely in the mid Joseon dynasty. They fall within the flat-hill type settlements, and their persistence was short. As for the characteristics of the settlements, they provided dwellings for the poor and the low class, or for drifting people and immigrants. The literature from the early to late Joseon dynasty constantly and most frequently showed that the settlements were for the poor and the low class. Given that the settlements with spread dwellings, among other settlement types, continuously occurred and accounted for the majority from the early to late Joseon dynasty, it is highly likely that this settlement type was for the poor and the low class. As the settlement form with multiple pit dwellings densely located intensely appeared in the mid Joseon dynasty and they are consistent with the contents of the literature, this settlement form can be regarded as providing temporary dwellings for drifting people and immigrants. While the settlements with spread dwelling communities had common characteristics of Joseon’s settlements in that the poor and the low class inhabited them, those settlements with multiple small pit dwellings located only for a while in a particular dynasty had unique characteristics in that they were temporarily formed by drifting people and immigrants.
