Maslach Bornout Inventory(...

The purpose of this research was to investigate the difference and relationships between the psychological burnout and self-reflection depending on the general traits of counselors, and the relationships between the sub-factors of self-reflection and psychological burnout. The questionnaire consisting of three instruments, the scale of Work- Experiences, the Scale of Self-reflection, a translation of Maslach Burnout Inventory were completed by 118 practicing counselors. To analyze the data, Descriptive Statistics, Analysis of Variance, Post hoc Tests, Correlation Analysis, Multiple Regression Analysis were performed using SPSS 11.5. The results of the study were as follows. First, the differences in psychological burnout, depending on the general traits of counselors (e.g. age, sex, the highest level of education) and counseling experiences (e.g. career in counseling, the types of clients who they have counseled, the number of counseling cases) were examined. The significant difference of psychological burnout in counselor’s ages and the correlation between more career in counseling and less psychological burnout were found out. And also the correlation of higher level of educational backgrounds and work experiences with more self-reflection was also confirmed. Second, each sub-factor of self-reflection and psychological burnout, other-understanding and Depersonalisation were correlated positively. Lastly, the results showed that the sub-factors of self-reflection explained 22.8% of depersonalisation. More self-reflection resulted in less depersonalisation, whereas more other-understanding did more depersonalisation. In conclusion, when the counselors do self-reflection, figuring out the causes of the uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, experiences about their counseling without avoiding them, they were less likely to experience the depersonalisation. On the other hand, other-understanding had a positive effect on depersonalisation, which suggested that the counselors' burnout was caused by paying little attention to their own physical, emotional health and interpersonal relationships, leading to the professional fatigue. The implication of the present research, examining the effect of self-reflection on burnout of the counselors, was to suggest a new understanding of counselors' own role in managing their professional burnout. Future research should explore and examine the effects of the variables in personal traits , which buffer professional burnout.
