This study was intended to examine differences in sensory profiles of young children aged three or under depending on social and emotional development. From May 13 to July30,2012,138 infant sand toddler saged 12 months to 36 months were selected from eight child care center slocatedin Gcity of Gyeong gi Province, and aparent report type questionnaire to measure Short Sensory Profile(SSP) and the Korean version of Social Attention and Communication Study (SACS-K) were administered. Among the 138 children who completed SACS-K, 121 children completed the SSP questionnaire and finally 82 children completed Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment (ITSEA), who were selected as subjects of the study. In order to check whether there are differences in social and emotional behaviors and sensory profiles in terms of gender and age, a t-test was conducted. A t-test was also performed to check whether there are differences between social and emotional behaviors and sensory profiles. Also, correlation analyses were conducted to examine relations among the scales of SSP, ITSEA, and SACS-K. Results are as follows: First, in order to measure differences in terms of gender and age in the ITSEA and SSP, the subjects were divided into two groups: 44 boys and 38 girls, and t-test was conducted. Significant differences were found in terms of gender in the ITSEA; girls recorded higher scores in inhibition to novelty, compliance, imitation/play, and empathy than boys, implying that girls aged three or under had difficulties in adapting to strange environments. Girls showed higher social and emotional abilities in compliance, imitation/play, and empathy than boys. In the SSP, a significant difference was found in vision; girls recorded higher scores than boys, implying that boys were more sensitive in visual sense than girls among young children aged three or under. Regarding differences in terms of age in the ITSEA and SSP, younger children showed significantly higher scores in sleep and maladaptation than older children while older children recorded significantly higher scores in general anxiety, inhibition to novelty, eating, attention, empathy, prosocial peer relations, and competence than younger children. In the SSP, younger children showed a higher level of sensitivity in vestibular organs than older children. Second, the subjects were divided into two groups: risk group and normal group depending on their social and emotional development to check differences between the two groups in terms of sensory profiles, and the two groups were compared in terms of the SSP for each domain of the ITSEA. A positive relationship was found between the SSP and the sub-variables of ITSEA in activity/impulsivity, peer aggression, externalizati- on, general anxiety, sleep, dysregulation, mastery/motivation, and atypicality. This means that infants and toddlers having social and emotional problems have difficulties in sensory processing compared with infants and toddlers without such problems. Third, correlation analyses were conducted to check relations among the ITSEA based on parent reports, SACS-K based on direct observation of researchers including the author, and SSP based on parent reports. No significant difference was found between SACS-K and SSP. However, a significant difference was found in one item between SACS-K and ITSEA and significant differences were also found in 28 items between ITSEA and SSP. These results clearly show that there is a relationship between social and communications development and sensory processing among normal infants and toddlers.
