Presently, we are living in a rapidly changing society that is becoming more diverse, global, and powered by unlimited information. These changes require a corresponding shift in the way we educate our students to make more autonomous and creative. One way to advance such a goal in folksong music class is by using teaching methods that encompass multimedia and popular culture. Thus, this study first seeks to analyze how folksongs are currently taught and then suggests teaching plans using new methods for teaching korean folksongs. To lay the theoretical foundation for this research, this study first discusses the meaning of folksongs, characteristics and classifications of folksongs, and current teaching plans based on the Korean folk music of the revised 7th National Curriculum. The study then investigates teaching methods appropriate for introducing folksongs to students in our information-oriented society. Three types of music textbooks of KUMSUNG Publishing Co., PAKYOUNGSA, and TAESUNG publishing companies, which are actually used in high schools, are analyzed according to the regions, rhythms, and scales that the textbooks cover. The study then suggests teaching plans for five folksongs, each one c one of the five major regions: Gyeonggi, western, eastern, the southern area, and Jeju. The study also compares the folksongs used in multimedia and popular music with original folksongs. In uncovering their origins or the legends associated with these popular versions of the songs, teachers can devise creative lesson plans and create an interesting class in folksong. To teach folk songs effectively, teachers first need to understand the importance of having a more inclusive attitude toward folksong education. The folksong teaching method suggested in this study is one of many possible approaches; additional methods should also be investigated. so as to provide creative as well as interesting folk song class. Moreover, the folk songs contained in the textbooks should be more diverse and include songs from all five regions mentioned above. Various rhythms should also be taught: the Utmori and Jungjungmori rhythms should be added to the Gutgeori, Semachi, and Jajinmori rhythms, which are currently taught in the elementary course. At the same time, the Susimgajo and Jejusori scales should be added to the Menarijo, Yukjabegijo, and Changbutaryeongjo scales. This will add balance and diversity to the curriculum and help educators in teaching Korean folksongs. Teachers need to intrigue students by developing computer-generated multimedia and to find ways to elevate students’ pride in our music by referencing popular culture. Equally important is to help students systematically understand the regional characteristics of folk songs. Thus, this study is meant to provide crucial foundational material for creating as well as informative folksong teaching plans. It also points the way toward a more open education in the study of folksongs.
