ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to analyze women's oppressive situations addressed by Caryl Churchill in Vinegar Tom, Cloud Nine and Top Girls, focusing on patriarchy and capitalism, and examine the theatrical techniques she strategically used to achieve gender equality. Churchill is a socialist feminist. She strategically uses theatrical techniques such as episodic structures, dramatic shifts of space and time, double casting, overlapping dialogue, social gests and 'songs' to criticize capitalism and patriarchal oppression that stimulates competition and selfishness in women and forces a male-focused life. In the above mentioned plays, Churchill focuses on the correlation between gender and social class, and conducts socialist feminist analysis. In Vinegar Tom, she reveals an oppressive situation with the theme of a 'witch hunt', and divides the characters into oppressors and the oppressed. In Cloud Nine, she reduces the time span between the Victorian era and the present day to twenty-five years, so the same characters experience both eras and accept liberal sexual culture. This emphasizes the importance of a change in consciousness of gender equality. Lastly, in Top Girls, Churchill stages extraordinary scenes where the main character Marlene, who is a successful career woman in modern society, comes together with the fictional top girls from the past. This indicates that the oppressive situation of women of the past still remains today. Chapter II of this study analyzes the process of how sexism, classism, the patriarchal system, prejudices and customs lead women who are a threat to the system being named 'witches' and alienated in 17th century England in Vinegar Tom, to examine the representation of oppression of women at the time. In Vinegar Tom, 'song' makes an unpleasant sound and stops acting, making the audience distanced from the setting of the 17th century and feel a sense of alienation. This makes the audience think about the images they are seeing and ask themselves how the images are related to their lives. In addition, the 'social gests' presented in several scenes show the audience in short that there is a relationship between special circumstances and power, through simple performances that describe the situation. Chapter III portrays the process of characters who experienced gender and sex oppression in the patriarchal system and colonial society of Act 1 changing into characters who enjoy free sex, such as heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality, in open, modern society. Through this process, Churchill claims that all people have the right to satisfy their sexual needs regardless of sex as defined by society, and presents a society of gender equality. Churchill stages the Victorian era in this play to stress that patriarchal and oppressive social elements in the present day are remainders of the past. Churchill is convinced that if she strategically used various theatrical methods to announce her messages, she would change the audience's way of thinking and in the end the society for gender equality will be built. Chapter IV uses the various situations and relationships of the successful modern day woman Marlene to reveal that the elements that oppress women are related to capitalism and the patriarchal system, and examines dilemmas of gender equality society through Angie, the daughter of Marlene and her scapegoat for success. Through the play, Top Girls, Churchill stresses that women, whether from the past or present, experience many hardships as they copy the actions of men or play the 'role of a female' that men want in order to become a 'top girl'. Churchill also uses a variety of theatrical methods to make the audience compare the past and the present and attempt their own interpretations. Through this process, the play aims to stress the selfish side of the successful Marlene. Marlene is an individualistic woman who believes one has to pay for being successful, and considers her sacrifices to be inevitable. This play criticizes the selfishness and individualist side of Marlene, who is tainted by capitalism. Ultimately, the three plays discussed in this study urge a change in the consciousness of the audience for a society of gender equality through Churchill's theatrical strategies which reveal the dilemmas and problems of women's oppression and portray a better world free of sexual oppression.
