The Purpose of this thesis is to examine female characters in Shakespeare's tragedies, Hamlet and Othello from a feminist perspective. This thesis investigates the ideologies of patriarchy upon which much in the plays has been based, and explores the matter of males' sexual unrest and females' social status within the patriarchical social system. Shakespeare's tragedies are based on the masculine ideology of Renaissance Period. In England between 1450 and 1630, the existed patriarchical power system was srengthened by the church, and it centralized nation offering a power ideological and practical support newly for reinforcement of absolute power of men- father and husband. Therefore, Shakespeare's women characters of his tragedies have limited and passive images, and because of the oppression of patriarchical power system, most plays show tragic ends. In Hamlet, Hamlet hears of the sin of his mother Gertrude from the late king, and generalizes her sin and dirtiness down to the whole women, and thinks Ophelia is the same. But we can know through Gertrude's words that she is very clear and wise, and from the scene that when the late king died, she followed his dead body, we could know that she was wise and virtuous. And when she believes that Hamlet becomes mad, she understands him as mother. Ophelia also loves Hamlet purely, and shows a feature that she obeys her father and elder brother. Only after her madness, Ophelia can give vent to her feelings and opinions freely. Finally, not because of Gertrude and Ophelia's actual act, but because of men's false eyes on women, Gertrude and Ophelia are valued negatively and have a tragic end. In Othello, the heroine Desdemona chooses the moore general Othello for her husband to live freely apart from the oppression of patriarchy. Iago who is obsessed with sexuality in his mind tries to destroy Othello's marriage by poisoning his mind with patriarchal male fantasy that his wife is false to him and commits adultery with his lieutenant Cassio. After all, Othello intends to punish her for her adultery to keep patriarchal society in order. But Desdemona does not show courage and strength before her death meaning patriarchal power and is victimized by her husband Othello. Although Emilia as a spokesperson for all the females is brave to criticize men for their wrong attitudes toward women, she also finally dies due to double-faced misled values and attitudes of men toward women in patriarchal society filled with prejudice, like Desdemona. The violence the men displays is so atrocious as to kill their wives ruthlessly. Therefore, this study provides an opportunity to closely investigate and assess from a feminist perspective how the values and attitudes of men toward women in patriarchal society affect the life and fate of the four female characters having self-identity awareness in Shakespeare's plays.
