ABSTRACT The elements of Neo-Classicism and Impressionism in「La Valse」by Maurice Ravel Cho, Eun-hyeon Department of Music The Graduate School Chonbuk National University Maurice Ravel(1875-1937) is largely regarded as a Classical Impressionist since he applied the aspects of impressionistic characteristics in his music based on the classical form. He used the form which was apparent rather than ambiguous. Especially, he preferred to use ternary form, Sonata form showing classical traits in the aspects of structure between movements and key scheme. Also, Ravel included the impressionistic elements in his music using harmonic idioms such as Whole-tone scale, Modes, Pentatonic scale, Poly-chords, Hemiola, Paralleled 5th chord, Open 5th chord and the use of harmonies to bring out color effect rather than just the harmonic function. This study has been focused on studying musical idioms in accordance with the Neo-Classical and Impressionistic elements appeared in Ravel’s work and figured out how these elements were applied through an analytical study of Ravel’s piano work,「La Valse」and could achieve the following results. First of all, Ravel used the apparent form as for the classical elements. He used the traditional ternary form in this piano work and made the listeners to feel the reflection of the impressionistic elements in harmony using the chords such as Fourth chords and Paralleled 5th chord, Open 5th chords, Poly-chords representing varieties in tone color. Non-harmonic tones and unresolved harmonies were shown causing the key to get away from the toner center. Also, in the use of scales, Ravel introduced various kinds of scales from the standard diatonic scales such as major, minor scales through Whole-tone scale, Pentatonic scale, Chromatic scale and Modes. 「La Valse」was originally composed for orchestral piece for ballet music and later transcribed into piano version. This work is comprised with the ternary form containing Coda and having diversely altered waltz rhythms on the basis of the definite rhythmic pulse of waltz. As mentioned earlier, both of the classical and impressionistic elements have been found through this study. Along with the classical elements of the contrapuntal composition technique having various sequences and alternating parts, the impressionistic elements were also shown by applying various kinds of scales in the music with the use of functional harmonies, paralleled 4th , 5th chords, and poly-chords.
