This study was intended to examine gender differences in three aspects: improvement of English competence through e-book extensive reading, the total number of books participants read and reading journals they wrote, and attitude change toward reading English e-books and studying English.
A total of 30 elementary students, 15 males and 15 females from the first to the forth grade, participated in e-book extensive reading for eight weeks. Both male and female groups were introduced to approximately 360 e-books from two web sites, with the target of reading four e-books and writing a reading journal every week.
The intermediate-level JET(Junior English Test) was administered at the beginning of the study as a pretest, and after 8 weeks of e-book extensive reading as a posttest. Students' self-reports of the total number of books and reading journals were also evaluated and compared between different gender groups. The degree of changes in attitudes was evaluated by using pre-and post-questionnaires.
The results showed as follows: First, there were not statistical differences between groups on improvement of listening, reading and listening, and reading ability. Within groups, male group had meaningful improvement on all those three sections, whereas female group showed meaningful improvement on reading and listening, and reading ability, not listening ability. Second, the total number of books and reading journals were analyzed significantly between genders, too. The data showed that male students read books more and wrote reading journals, resulting in male students' better gains on the post test. In comparison with the gap of amount of reading between the two groups, the difference of the total number of written reading journals was not that big. It implies male students were reluctant to write reading journals, although they completed them more than female students. There was close correlation between student performance in e-book extensive reading and the total number of books. Also, the same story has to be told about student performance and reading journals. Third, gender differences in attitudinal change were not significant statistically between the two groups. However, e-book extensive reading had positive effects on the students' attitudinal change in all five items of affective attitude questionnaire such as "interest and confidence", "participation", "understanding", "will", as well as "intimacy" within groups.
Based on these findings, some suggestions or implications are made as follows: School educational field can give tailored and student-oriented lessons based on gender and students' attainment targets. Male students can take advantage of e-book extensive reading more than female students, especially on English listening competence. However, female students can expect improvement of English reading ability, not listening ability through English e-book extensive reading. Hence, students can decide to read e-books according to their goals. Also, understanding gender differences in e-book extensive reading helps to contribute to the advancement of e-book reading environment by encouraging the development of more effective electronic reading materials according to gender. If on-line reading material developers consider these gender differences, they can develop more suitable e-books for learners' achievable academic goals.
