A new high refractive index organic materials were synthesized from titanium(Ⅳ) isopropoxide and then mixed with UV curing resin to give thin film forming property. The refractive index value of new organic materials could be varied by adjusting the composition of the UV resin in the mixture. The refractive index of each sample was measured after spin coating on glass substrate and the optical constants were determined by using ellipsometer. Four refractive index modulating UV resins were spin coated and cured repeatedly on glass substrate followed by ITO transparent anode deposition by sputtering method. The organic layers were deposited on top of anode layer followed by LiF/Al cathode deposition to give OLED devices with refractive index gradient between ITO anode layer and glass substrate. The optical simulation for light extraction from the emitting layer of OLED was compared with the measurement data of the fabricated OLED devices. Some important results are as following. 1. The UV curable type organic materials with high refractive index could be prepared from titanium(Ⅳ) isopropoxide and mixing with UV resin. 2. The low sheet resistance transparent anode could be obtained by making ITO thin film on top of the cured multiple organic thin layer to give refractive index gradient layers between ITO anode and glass substrate. The lowest sheet resistance of ITO thin film(thickness 1 nm) was obtained with Ar/O₂ gas mixture(O₂: 0.1 % by volume) at 1,200 W power and gas flow rate of 0.2 sccm. 3. The refractive index of ITO layer was 2.11 at 510 nm wavelength and those of organic thin layers could be varied from 1.55 to 1.84 in four different layers. 4. Macleod software program could be used to design and simulate the optical property of the OLED devices with varying refractive index thin films between ITO anode and glass substrate. 5. The transmittance measurements of ITO/organic layers/glass substrate showed highest value with two organic layers by using UV-vis. spectrophotometer. 6. The white OLED devices with different number of organic layers for refractive index modulation exhibited highest luminance in the OLED device with 3 organic index modulating layers. The difference between optical simulation and OLED measurement seemed to be due to the luminance dependence of OLED on the wavelength of the emissions from the OLED devices.
