Background and Objectives: Locomotion works in an integration of visual somatosensory, and vestibular information. An ataxia is the most representative symptom of locomotion related disorders. The contribution of vestibular information on human locomotion has not been fully understood. However, the vestibular information is used in higher spinal rhythm generators, and it regulates the extensor muscle tone of lower leg. Therefore, the vestibular functional changing might be one cause of ataxia. To prove the relationship between the ataxia and the vestibular function, we investigated the difference in gait cycle pattern between vestibular neuritis (VN) patients and normal subjects. Materials and Methods: Gyroscope sensors were set on both lower legs in healthy control (n=10), and age matched VN patients (n=10). And then, we asked participants to walk along the corridor as long as 40m, two times. Finally we got the frequency analysis of gait (Hz), the corrected angular velocity of each axes on both legs, maximum and minimum angle (°) in swing phase, upswing and down swing velocity (°/s), stride-swing-stance time (s), and stance ratio through the summation data of gait cycle. Results: The pitch motion difference variance was the most obvious between both groups (p<0.05). In frequency analysis, all healthy control showed more than two dominant frequencies. It was 1.1 ± 0.023, 2.0 ± 0.102, respectively. These dominant frequencies were not shown clearly in VN patients. In VN patients, gait initiation (heel strike and pre-swing time) was various. The gait velocity in VN patients was decreased. It was caused by significantly increasing of stance and stride time in lesion side (p<0.05). And VN patients showed decreasing swing angle of leg in lesion side (p<0.05). Conclusion: VN patients’ walking pattern was highly phase dependant, especially in pitch motion. The decreased gait velocity and the swing angle of lower leg were characteristics in VN patients. Those finding could be used as diagnostic screening point to differentiate the cause of ataxia.
