제안한 에너지 하베스터는 구조와 크기에 따라 기어(gear) 형태의 에너지 하베스터와 PCB(Printed Circuit Board) 형태의 에너지 하베스터 그리고 MEMS(microelectromechanical systems) 공정을 이용한 에너지 하베스터로 구분하였다.

Recently, energy harvesting technologies are applied to various applications including wireless sensors, wireless switches, pervasive computing environment and etc. An electromagnetic induction energy harvesting technologies are considered as good alternatives to reduce the dependency on secondary batteries for low power electronics. In this thesis, electromagnetic induction energy harvesters that can convert from kinetic energy of human body vibration to electric energy are designed and fabricated. To satisfy various ranges of power requirements on each application, three types of energy harvesters including gear type energy harvester, PCB (Printed Circuit Board) type energy harvester and MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) type energy harvester are designed.
For energy harvesting from conventional walking, the gear type energy harvester is designed. Developed gear type energy harvester can convert kinetic energy of vertical movement from footstep to rotational movement using rack gear box module. After then, this rotational motion changed to energy with higher rotational speed by accelerating gear box module and this energy transmitted to rotary type electric power generator. Fabricated harvester showed 25.36 W of maximum electrical power generation performance at the frequency of 2 Hz.
PCB type energy harvester is designed which can be directly integrated with other electronic components. To form the three dimensional coil structures, one patterned PCB is solder bonded with another flipped PCB. For magnetic induction, inside of coil structure was filled with magnetic substance and external magnets with rotary motion are applied to near the harvester for magnetic induction. Developed PCB type energy harvester that has 110 turns of copper wires with 450 ㎛ × 20 ㎛structure showed 29.89㎼ of power generation performance at the frequency 5.2 Hz.
To maximize power density of magnetic induction energy harvester, MEMS type energy harvester is designed using semiconductor manufacturing processes. In this harvester, fine pattered three-dimensional micro-coils are wound magnetic substance and external magnet is applied to change the polarity of the magnetic substance located inside the coil. The half of coil patterns are formed on the KOH etched silicon slopes and similar to PCB energy harvester, one half-patterned silicon chip is directly bonded with flipped another silicon chip and form chip level packaging naturally. Fabricated MEMS type energy harvester showed 78 ㎼ of maximum power generation performance at the frequency 20 Hz.
Though the developed three types of energy harvesters have identical electromagnetic induction principle they have different physical size and different power generation characteristics. Therefore, they can be applied to various applications area to meet the environmental requirements. Gear type energy harvester can be installed on the building or subway floor in the large floating population place, PCB and MEMS type energy harvester can be applied to auxiliary power system of the portable mobile devices. With the successful completion of this work, energy harvester can be applied to various power suppliers, from small power applications including mobile sensor, devices or embodied medical devices to large power applications including building automation or transportation. Afterward more efficient material and structure of harvester are researched; it expects receiving directly power supply of various mobile devices from activity of the human body.
