Lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) is the advanced hybrid energy storage device with functionalities derived from both electrical double layer capacitor and lithium-ion batteries. Typically, LIC be assembled with activated carbon (AC) cathode electrode and graphite negative electrode. During the charge/discharge of LICs, adsorption/diabsorption of ions occur on the AC electrode (e.g., non-faradic process). Different with the AC electrode, the graphite electrode accumulates charge by faradic process, such as Li intercalation/de-intercalation to the graphite electrode. High energy density of LIC is achieved not only the faradic process of graphite electrode but also according to the high amount of Li source of electrodes. Negative electrode of LIC has preliminarily lithiated carbonaceous electrode was used. This preliminary treatment of negative electrode is also called the pre-lithiation. In general, pre-lithiation is carried out using a lithium foil; the preliminary charging of negative electrode is carried out by two methods, electronic charger or short circuiting by wire externally. However, those methods must be pre-lithiated in the cell package with lithium foil. After pre-lithiation, lithium foil must be removed from the cell package. The whole procedure is too complex and a lots of pre-lithiation time is needed. For example, the time taken for the Li/graphite potential to reach 0.05V was observed to be ~10h irrespective of the amount of graphite by using electronic charger. To solve these problems, researchers focused on the positive electrode added by Li-containing compounds to replace the lithium foil as a pre-doping source, such as LiFePO4 and Li2MoO3. However, pre-doping efficiency is still the problem which has not been solved. In this work, a more efficient pre-lithiation method, directly touching with lithium foil and graphite electrode was studied. Also, the efficiency of pre-doping and performance of lithium ion capacitor using directly touching method was discussed to compare with above two conventional methods. Directly touching method is a novel way by using the direct touching of lithium metal and graphite. This method promotes the cell lightweight because it is unnecessary to leave lithium foil inside; and shows more efficient in pre-doping process than other two methods. The faster ion transport accrues between lithium foil and graphite electrode due to the absence of separator in this directly touching method. The targeted de-doping capacity for LICs in this work was calculated as 3.92mAh (16% of full de-doping capacity), and normal capacitance for full cell is the range of about 120F/g to 160F/g. Directly touching method can use only 4min to achieve the above targeted de-doping capacity while more than 15 min for electronic charger and short circuiting by wire externally. Although 4min is a short pre-doping time, the full cell by using directly touching method still showed excellent high rate and long cycle abilities, 96.1% of capacitance remained after 1000cycles at 10.0C rate.
