The Pt-deposited Pd electrodes were prepared using a two-gun sputtering deposition system by separately operating Pd and Pt targets. As the deposition time of Pt target increases, both the thickness of Pt layers for the electrodes and the coverage of Pt on the Pd electrodes increase. In cyclic voltammograms, the peak portion corresponding to the oxygen reduction reaction for Pd catalyst gradually decreases with increasing sputtering time of Pt target. Moreover, the excellent electrocatalytic activity for methanol electrooxidation reaction of the Pd/Pt-7 is mainly attributed to an optimized Pt coverage on the Pd electrodes. To apply the sputtered electrodes to powder-type catalysts for actual fuel cells, the carbon supported PdCo@Pt core-shell NPs prepared via a two-step route. The as-prepared PdCo@Pt/C with an average particle size of ~3.5 nm exhibited a well-defined nanostructure with Pd-rich core and Pt shell formed by displacing Co core by Pt. The PdCo@Pt/C showed higher current density at the kinetic controlled region and more positive half-wave potential for the oxygen reduction reaction compared to pure Pt. In a cycling stability test, no remarkable activity loss for the PdCo@Pt/C electrocatalyst was determined.
