Abstract The Case Study on Runaway Experience of the Adolescents 〈Focusing on the runaway adolescents in a shelter〉 Youn, yang sook Dept. of Social Welfare The Graduate School of Knowledge and Social Welfare Hanbuk University This case study was focused on the runaway experience of the adolescents protected by youth shelter. The runaway teens staying in the shelters of Northern Gyeonggi Province were targeted at this survey. In the past five years, the runaway frequency of teens between 14 years and 19 years old has been high in Northern Gyeonggi Province. This study was based on the interview materials with the runaway adolescents. Teenagers engaged in the interview spontaneously for showing their innermost thoughts about the experiences founded on the individual, familial, school or peers, and social factors called eco-systemic variables. On the grounds of 'Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design' suggested by Creswell(1998), the runaway teenagers were observed and interviewed. After that, each case was analysed on the basis of collected data, and by extension, the similarities and differences between cases were analyzed. Thus, I analysed each case on the runaway experience comprehensively according to eco-systemic variables, and found the intervention methods of the community and the solution about the social safety net. These results are summarized as follows. First, individual factors from abuse, neglect, excessive interference and sexual assault by parents, and conflict with stepmother include low self-esteem, depression, loneliness, obsession, and anxiety about the future. These factors made the adolescents fall behind in the family, school, and community. As a result, teenagers chose to run away from home for deviation and survival. Second, family factors as a divorce, separation, second marriage, death, runaway, gambling, abuse, neglect, and sexual assault of parents were the biggest influence to the runaway adolescents. Subjects felt unprotected from their family, and they thought that the were abandoned by their parents. They didn't want to understand the lives of the adults. On the other hand, family was often the object of the runaway teens' longing. Third, school or peers factors also had effect on the runaway adolescents. Peers became the first relief in the runaway situation. They consoled the subjects whose body and mind were wounded, understood the subjects' agony, communicated with the subjects about the future of their lives. And the runaway teenagers went on with their studies through the qualification exam and alternative school. It could have been not only honorable but also shameful for them to run away from home to the school or peers. Fourth, social factors consisted of harmful environment accessible to the runaway adolescents. After runaway from home, subjects had worked part-time job at stores, parking lot, manual labor, distributing handbills, PC room, and so on. Even though they had worked part-time job, they couldn't have escaped from the economic hardships. It had made for them to be exposed to wrongdoing such as car theft, market burglary, prostitution, call girl, and karaoke assistant. Most subjects regretted these experiences, but they were still on the threshold of crimes. They felt frustrated and painful as soon as they ran away from home. Only in shelters, they could dream of their lives with happiness. The results of this study based on eco-systemic variables suggested the intervention methods of the individual, family, school, and community about adolescents' runaway. Also, the necessity of government support and effectiveness of the social safety net were emphasized.
