The purpose of this study was to find out the factors that affect adolescents' reading. Among others, this study set personality types, reading role model, library positivity, reading attitude and reading effectiveness as latent factors and formed an experiment model through framing a hypothesis on the corelation between reading effectiveness and influential factors. The relevant data are selected through questionnaires from 16 high schools in Seoul and 6 metropolitan cities. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the results of descriptive statistics indicate that adolescents show low performance in reading effectiveness and reading attitude with the scores of 2.81 and 2.65 on the Likert 5 scale, respectively. The score of influence of parents, teachers and peers is 2.53 points and library positivity displays the lowest score of 2.22. And the highest scoring latent factor is the reading continuance willingness with a score of 3.09. Second, according to the result of comparative analysis on the adolescent’s individual attributes, female students showed higher reading effectiveness than their male peers. There were no significant discrepancy in reading effectiveness between private and public institutions, while the analysis on differences in educational path indicated that students on academic path performed higher than vocational students in every category. Analysis of the students’ parents showed a discrepancy on the parental role model with regards to the parental occupation, while the parents’ past academic performance showed a positive correlation with the students’ reading effectiveness. Students with preferences for reading publications in hard copies showed higher reading effectiveness than students preferring digital publications, and students who read 10 or more books published digitally showed a trend of decreased reading effectiveness. Third, among the all factors influencing reading effectiveness, reading attitude was the greatest influential factor followed by library positivity and then reading role model. Analysis of the secondary latent factors indicated that school library positivity had greater influence on reading attitude than public library positivity. As for the reading effectiveness, public library positivity had greater influence on reading engagement while school library positivity was more influential for reading satisfaction and reading continuance willingness. As the secondary latent factors for reading role model, the role of friends had the greatest influence on reading attitude and reading effectiveness while that of parents was the second. While parental role model has more influence on public library positivity than school one, friend role model showed greater influence on school library positivity. Reading attitude was analysed to be the most influential factor on the all secondary latent factors of reading effectiveness, especially reading continuance willingness. In the case of meditated effect, reading role model has a indirect effect on reading effectiveness and reading attitude through library positivity, and library positivity affects indirectly on reading effectiveness through reading attitude. On the basis of the result above, the recommendations for improving reading effectiveness are proposed as follows: The recommendations for improvement on reading tendency of adolescents are as follows. First, students must be provided with reading programs attuned to individual attributes. This entails more active reading programs for male students when considering gender differences, development and implementation of specialized program for vocational students. Developing measures for eliminating differences in individual reading environments needs to be established. Second, considering the differential effects between electronic and physical medium on reading efficiency, the provision of a guideline for selection in reading medium is absolutely necessary. The recommendations for improving reading role model are as follows. First, a greater level of parental involvement needs to be promoted including a parental reading sample model, family reading discussions, and active parental solicitation for library use. Second, we recommend promoting greater teacher involvement such as initiation of duty training for reading education, development and initiation of reading programs encouraging greater teacher-student interaction, and improvements in reading programs for the teachers. Third, we recommend an active utilization of peer relationships through enhanced support for the current peer interaction reading programs and the development of peer interaction reading programs on individual school levels. The recommendations for improving library positivity are as follows. First, plans for prompt readjustment of student attitude toward libraries and improvement on student library usage need to be developed. Second, plans for differentiating various types of library are necessary. The reading programs for school libraries and public libraries need to be differentiated while establishment of customized promotional strategy tied to the library types may improve library positivity with the beneficial effects to reading effectiveness.
