The purpose of this study is to evaluate the biological performances, survival and growth rates of the common octopus, octopus vulgaris, in individual (tube type cage; TC) and grouped rearing systems (den type cage; DC and waste tire type cage; WC) via in-situ (Experiment 1) and indoor water tank test (Experiment 2). Further, this study aims to develop the optimal rearing systems for octopus grow-out. A series of experiments were carried out in order to investigate the survival and growth rates of octopus for TC and DC in Experiment 1 and for TC, DC and WC in Experiment 2. The cage models were made of polypropylene pipe for the frames and cover nets (mesh size: 5.0 mm). The sizes of the cage models were 1,100L×600B×500D mm, composed of PE eel pots (hiding place: Φ130 mm×42 pieces, total volume: 0.33 m3) in TC, 1000L×500B×500D mm, constructed of PVC pipes (hiding place: Φ130 mm×12 pieces, total volume: 0.25 m3) in DC and 1070L×520B×790D mm in WC (waste tire : Φ578 mm×3 pieces, total volume: 0.41 m3). In Experiment 1, rearing systems TC and DC models were setup at the sea bottom and an in-situ test was conducted at a depth of 15 m in Seosaeng, Ulsan, Korea for a period of 55 days (23 July to 2 October, 2012). In Experiment 2, TC, DC and WC models were set up in an indoor running water tank (7,000L×6000B×820D mm, water depth: 0.82 m) at Chonnam National University, Yeosu, Korea. Two ongrowing tests were conducted for 72-46 days (2 April to 13 June, 2013). In Experiment 1, a total of 23 octopuses were used, with an initial body wet weight of 342.82 ± 198.79 g. At this site, the water temperatures ranged from 10.01 to 27.54℃, and salinity ranged from 30 to 32.79 psu. In Experiment 2, a total of 60 octopuses were used with an initial body wet weight of 422.37 ± 163.42 g. The water temperatures, salinity, DO and pH in the water tank ranged from 10.88 to 21.73°C, 25.15 to 34.99 psu, 8.63 to 7.96 mg/L, 7.87 to 8, respectively. Octopuses were fed a mixed diet containing sardine and manila clam (approximately 3-8% of their body weights). The results of the experiments were analyzed with the statistical computer package SPSS ver. 21 from IBM. In Experiment 1, the octopuses showed a higher mortality in TC (92.31%) than in DC (80%) during the experimental period. The survival rates of grouped octopuses in DC were higher by 12% than those of the individual (TC) octopus reared in TC. As the water temperature increased to 27.54℃, however, the survival rates in TC and DC decreased rapidly to 7.69% and 20%, respectively. In addition, the growth rates of the octopus was reduced in the two cages due to the high temperature (25 to 27.54℃), which lasted over the course of two weeks. In Experiment 2, the survival rates of octopus in DC (80-80%) and WC (70-90%) were higher than those of the TC (20-30%). The survival rates of grouped octopuses in DC and WC were higher by 50-60% than those of octopuses reared individually in TC. By contrast, the growth rate, or the specific growth rate of octopus in TC (0.46-1.04% day-1), was slightly higher than those of in DC (0.30-0.04% day-1) and WC (0.00-0.88% day-1). The next step is to conduct in-situ panel survey tests in order to investigate whether or not the rearing systems could be incorporated effectively for the octopus aquaculture industry, considering the deployment depth of the rearing systems and the stocking densities of the octopus reared in the systems.
