The hydrogen production by steam reforming (SR) of glycerol was investigated over Ni/γ-Al2O3 (A, B, C) and M-Ni/γ-Al2O3 (M: K, Ca, Sr) catalysts. The Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with different calcination temperature (750, 850, and 950 °C) were prepared by dry impregnation method using nickel(Ⅱ) nitrate (Ni(NO3)2·6H2O) solution and granular-type γ-Al2O3 support, and M-Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by same method using various metal precursors and Ni/γ-Al2O3 (C) catalyst. It is well known that the active metal species of steam reforming reactions are the group Ⅷ-Ⅹ metals, and especially nickel is commonly used because of its outstanding activity and economical availability. Also it is reported that basic metal such as alkali and alkaline-earth precursors can increase surface basicity to neutralize the acid site of the γ-Al2O3 support and it derives less coke formation on catalytic surface.
In this paper, the effect of calcination temperature on catalytic activity and coke formation, and the role of basic metal precursors on M-Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were investigated by carrying out the various characterization of catalysts before and after the SR of glycerol.
It was found that Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst calcined at high temperatures showed a lower coke formation and less glycerol conversion during the SR of glycerol. It was considered that the calcination at high temperature leads the increased NiAl2O4 formation, and NiAl2O4 species has more coke resistibility then the other nickel species such as NiO, NiO2, and metallic Ni. Also it was shown that the addition of alkali-metal promoter led to decrease not only glycerol conversion but also coke formation during the SR of glycerol. It was considered that the addition of alkali-metal promoter could increase surface basicity to prevent the interaction between glycerol and active nickel species.
Among these catalysts, strontium-promoted Sr-Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst showed low coke formation, and methane selectivity, and high hydrogen selectivity. It was considered that surface strontium can inhibit glycerol dehydration to suppress coke precursor such as ethylene, acetone and acetaldehyde, result in decreased CHx adsorptivity to prevent methane decomposition and increase water adsorptivity to induce coke oxidation by steam.
