As the diplomatic relationship between South Korea and China flourished around the early 1990s, their involvement in trade, tourism, foreign investment, as well as other economic areas, began to grow and develop. Overtime, Chinese consumers were being exposed to Korean products, culture, and media. Consequently, a high demand of Korean-made products and media by younger Chinese consumers initiated the start of the “Korean Wave.” Due to the influence of the “Korean Wave,” the Korean garment industries were able to successfully enter Chinese markets. Since its induction into the market, other competitors have not been able to successfully compete against Korean clothing companies. After 2000, the demand for Korean style clothing began to diminish and the shift in demand for European, American (Global SPA brands), and Chinese brands began. Surprisingly, Japanese garment companies’ research and analyses of the Chinese market enabled them to adapt to changes and develop products that would meet many consumers’ needs. This tactic helped many Japanese companies to survive in an already changing market; whereas, some Korean clothing companies began to fall behind their competitors and not realizing the need to acclimate themselves to the current changes. The Korean companies’ failure to analyze data accurately and the changes in the Chinese market were due to several reasons. They lacked research on different body sizes of Chinese consumers living in different regions that have different cultural and climates. Another reason is that Korean companies lacked an understanding of Chinese distribution channels. Lastly, if data was collected, they failed to conduct detail analyses of the Chinese market. In order for Korean garment companies to once again compete successfully with other competitors, research on the current status and characteristics of the Chinese market was conducted. The primary purpose of this research is to address the critical issues and problems the Korean clothing companies encountered in China as well as assist companies to develop strategies that would lead to successful business in China. Research material and data presented in this study were obtained from the Korean Clothing Industry Association, Statistical Bureau of China, the Textile Industry Association, and Samsung Fashion Institute. In addition, samples and internet materials, journals, and research papers were obtained from fashion related institutes and Korean researchers. The purpose of this study is to provide important information to Korean companies to assist them in understanding potential business ventures as well as develop effective strategies for entry into the Chinese market. To ensure the success of Korean companies in China, close observation of China’s economic conditions, clothing market status, market characteristics, trends, the distribution channels, and brand recognition was done. Furthermore, this study hopes to analyze, identify, and develop market-entry strategies by examining the past failures of some Korean clothing companies as well as conditions or variables that led to the unsuccessful entry or survival those companies in the Chinese market.
