Solar module is composed of solar cells, low iron glass, encapsulant, back sheet, frame and junction box to protect from chemical, optical and physical corruption such as UV(Ultra Violet) light, moisture movement, hail attacks and so on. Especially, encapsulant material is one of the significant parts of the PV(Photovoltaic) module. In this paper, reliability experiments for variety encapsulants were carried out and degradation on the output power of the PV module were analysed. First of all, diverse experiments for encapsulants were measured to understand their own characteristics. Three types of encapsulants, EVA(Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) which have VA(Vinyl Acetate) ratio of 28 % and 33 % respectively and POE(Polyolefin) were selected for the comparing samples. Because EVA is cheap and convenient, most of PV module companies commonly use it as an encapsulant material. However, the EVA has weak properties on PID(Potential Induced Degradation) and endurance. New material of encapsulant in PV module is needed to overcome these problems. One of the candidate materials is POE that has excellent stability against deformation and discoloration in harsh environments. The characteristics of △YI(Yellow Index) after UV pre-pretreatment, volume resistance, water vapor using by WVTR(Water Vapor Transmission Rate) method and cross-linked ratio via Xylene method were evaluated to analyse the physical characteristics before modularization. Lamination recipe was fixed and gel contents were measured at every experiment to anchor cross-linked ratio. Output power of PV module for each encapsulant is measured and PID, one of the major reasons for degradation of PV power system, were then tested. Outdoor exposure test was first carried out to evaluate LID(Light Induced Degradation) characteristics of the modules. Damp heat test was then performed to predict durability of the modules at high temperatures and humidities. Thermal cycling test was the next to forecast the degradation of the output power and reliability of the modules with temperatures. PID was finally tested and is called as a main reason of power drop. From the results, advantage and disadvantage of EVA and POE were compared to suggest a proper encapsulant material for the module with different environments.
