Developing mines have played a large role in economy by producing energy resources such as coal or industrial metals and base metals. However, areas left as a dead pit after such development are making a bad effect on the health of residents nearby from soil and water pollution caused by heavy metals, which poses an urgent problem to settle. This study used not physical or chemical treatment but eco-friendly phytoremediation to plant Populus euramericana, Populus tomentiglandulosa and Salix koreensis well-known for purification species of trees in the neighbors of the stream of leachate from Tailing dam of abandoned mine. After a certain period, their growth amount, internal heavy metal absorption and accumulation efficiency were compared to evaluate the purifying effect among tree species. Vegetation area was collected in autumn (October) by plating Populus euramericana, Populus tomentiglandulosa and Salix koreensis in spring (April) around the pool at the point of leachate from the piled-up Tailing dam. For purifying effect, physicochemical property of soil and leachate and density of heavy metals were analyzed, measuring and calculating growth amount, density and content of heavy metals by areas of plant life, BCF and TF. As a result of analyzing the heavy metal concentration for soil and leachate, the soil revealed concentration of zinc at 7,116, 6,088 and 1,985mg/kg for initial, 6 months and 24 months later, respectively. Concentration of manganese was 1,563, 1,338 and 642mg/kg respectively, both metal concentrations tending to reduce with elapse of time. For leacahte, concentration of zinc was 48.9, 32.6 and 27.7mg/kg while concentration of manganese 55.5, 44.5 and 38.0mg/kg, respectively, reducing gradually. As a result of analyzing annual growth amount by tree species, for tree height, Populus tomentiglandulosa, 215.2cm per year, showed the biggest growth, followed by Salix koreensis 101.8cm and Populus euramericana 36.6cm in the order. For root collar diameter, Populus tomentiglandulosa was 3.0mm per year, the highest, followed by Salix koreensis 1.3mm and Populus euramericana 0.8mm in the order. For biomass, too, Populus tomentiglandulosa 105.41mg/yr was the largest in increase, followed by Salix koreensis 28.34 and Populus euramericana 20.88 in the order. As a result of analyzing heavy metal concentration and content in plant life, for concentration of manganese, measurement 6 months later showed absorption of 42.9~74.2mg/kg at trunk and 54.1~97.9mg/kg at root for all fast-growing tree species, while at the time of 24 months later, they showed less difference in concentration compared to 6 months later. Besides, for concentration of zinc, Populus tomentiglandulosa and Salix koreensis were similar to density of manganese, while Populus euramericana showed 2-3 times higher concentration than other fast-growing tree species at both root and trunk with elapse of time. As for mean heavy metal content per individual, for zinc, Populus euramericana showed 15.52mg, followed by Populus tomentiglandulosa 9.81 and Salix koreensis 3.69 in the order, proving that Populus euramericana had a higher content of heavy metal compared to other species. For manganese, it was 18.96, 4.30 and 3.87mg for Populus tomentiglandulosa, Populus euramericana and Salix koreensis, respectively, proving that Populus tomentiglandulosa had the highest content of heavy metal. As a result of calculating BCF by purification species of trees, BCF on zinc and manganese showed increase after time elapse for all species. BCF on zinc didn't show significant difference at 6 months later but at measurement 24 months later, Populus euramericana was the highest (0.079) proving a comparatively higher accumulation efficiency for zinc with growth. Besides, BCF on manganese 24 months later was the highest in Populus tomentiglandulosa (0.053) while showing no significant difference between the remaining species. On the other hand, TF by purification species of trees showed no change by time but was the highest in Salix koreensis, followed by Populus tomentiglandulosa and Populus euramericana in the order.
