In this study, three different kinds of Mg alloys were dealt with. First, in a AZ31 Mg alloy produced by strip casting, the effect of speed ratio (SR) in differential speed rolling on the development of texture and microstructure was systematically investigated in a wide SR range between 1 and 3 at a fixed thickness reduction of 20% by rolling at 200℃. At high SRs≧2, dynamically recrystallized microstructures were developed. The intensity of the basal texture component increased with SR, but decreased to the level of the starting material at high SRs≧2. The occurrence of the dynamic recrystallization at high SRs was attributed to high-dislocation density accumulation and high temperature rise of a deforming sheet due to large plastic deformation of which amount increased with SR. The basal texture weakening at high SRs was attributed to extensive tension twinning that occurred in the basal-oriented matrix, which is rarely observed in conventional rolling. Due to the positive effect of texture and microstructure, tensile ductility improvement was significant as compared to that by symmetric rolling.
Second, AT63 and ATX630 Mg alloys were fabricated by employing twin roll strip casting, and then the effect of Ca on the evolution of textures and microstructures was investigated at each stage of processings. The as-casted AT63 Mg alloy was constructed of equiaxed grains while a dendritic microstructure was observed in the as-casted ATX630 Mg alloy. After thickness reduction of 70% by rolling at 573K, these two alloys revealed a similar level of the basal texture intensity, approximately twice stronger than that the initial textures. When the rolled specimens were annealed at 623K for 1hr, the intensity of the basal texture increased in AT63 Mg alloy and that in ATX630 Mg alloy maintained in such a similar level as rolled. In the latter, a significant reduction in grain size was attributed to the effects of Ca addition, and as a result, in tensile elongation measured much lager than that in AT63 Mg alloy.
Third, in AZ80 Mg alloy bar fabricated by continuous casting, the effect of pre-strain on the forging formability was examind. The as-casted AZ80 Mg alloy characterized by a strong //CD texture. After compressive deformation at room temperature(RT), the grain size decreased due to dynamic recrystallization and strong //CD and weak //CD textures were generated by the operation of tensile twin and basal slip. On the other hand, in material deformed at 350℃ (HD material), all of slip systems like , slip and tensile twin were activated so that a texture randomization could occur. HD material annealed at 350℃ for 120 min revealed bimodal grain size distribution, and as a result, it exhibited a outstanding forging formability in fabricating scroll rotor, component of a air-compressor.
