The textile industry including the manufacture of chemical fibers is the labor-intensive one, with the capital-intensive chemical industry, which has helped our country to achieve rapid economic growth in the past. While textile exports of China amounted to 40.2 percent, the largest, of global market share in 2010 with the textile industry in Vietnam, India with the nature of low wages due to abundant labor gaining international market share, textile exports of Korea decreased to 2.1 percent of worldwide market share. Meanwhile, Korean government has implemented the environmental regulations such as Greenhouse gas(GHG) & Energy Target Management System in order to address climate change by allocating GHG emission allowances to the industry since 2010. It has continued to reduce GHG emission allowances for the textile sector in spite of increased number of controlled entities and prepared for legislation of ‘Enforcement Decree of Act on the Allocation and Trading of GHG Emission Permits’ for the Emission Trading Scheme scheduled to be implemented in 2015. To respond flexibly to the situation at home and abroad, the textile industry including manufacturers of chemical fibers should strive to find technologies to reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions and apply them to their own textile & chemical fibers production process without neglecting its efforts for research and development to secure original technologies. After the technologies to help the process use less energy and release fewer GHG are gathered, however, a step for engineers from the industry to analyze and evaluate them would be needed prior to application of the technologies to the process. So I have begun to research for a comprehensive method to complement the existing economic assessment for only selected technologies leading to the textile process improvement. For the comprehensive assessment method, I have borrowed the concept of Eco-efficiency coined by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development(WBCSD) and come up with a formula which is composed of total annual sales of a company as the numerator and GHG emissions resulting from the application of the technology to the company as the denominator. The figure of the divisor should be, however, calculated as the company’s total annual GHG emissions minus GHG emission reductions caused by the technology. After economic analyses and environmental analyses on introduced such cases as improve energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions were carried out, the result that the eco-efficiency on the technologies introduced by the selected companies was that the indicators from the companies varied based on the environmental analysis. I came to the conclusion that the total annual sales of a company seem not to correlate with its annual GHG emissions. Further research to complement the limitation of this study is thought to be needed for more accurate assessment indicators to be derived.
